A composer for the past 18 years and a music enthusiast since 1976, Robert Guerin has worked on different personal and professional projects, such as feature and short films, television themes, and educational and corporate videos. Comprehensive update to an excellent book on MIDI technology

Although a variety of MIDI gear has been replaced by software, in-depth information about MIDI is as useful as ever. A full two decades after its inception, most musicians working in the electronic realm only have a cursory knowledge of what this technology is capable of and how to fully take advantage of it within the modern recording studio. Fortunately, the second edition of MIDI Power is designed to clear up much of this mystery. The first few chapters address MIDI hardware, General MIDI, and Standard MIDI Files, followed by almost 60 pages devoted to MIDI messages. Two chapters on MIDI computer basics lead to discussions of sequencing, virtual instruments, and advanced topics. The author guides users through various real-world scenarios on how to incorporate MIDI's myriad functions into the average studio situation, including topics such as SysEx data, General MIDI, the use of USB and FireWire MIDI devices, and how to interface computers and external hardware. The book's appendices are gold mines of information, incorporating technical explanations, practical tips, and the official MIDI 1.0 Specification. Each chapter ends with review problems for which there are answers in the back of the book. The book is profusely illustrated and is a worthwhile update to the valuable but aged first edition. About as comprehensive as a book can be

This is a great source of just about everything in the science of MIDI. It is written at a fairly high level, not for the "uninitiated". It doesn't have everything, though. I was interested in learning about learn-modes in various DAWs and the mappings involved but it doesn't cover that. But keep in mind that there are books that just deal with the use of DAWs. This book concentrates mostly just on MIDI itself. Toward the end of this book, there are some great suggestions on improving the quality of sound in music created using MIDI and DAWs which I found very helpful. MIDI is a very technical subject and this book helps demystify it.

Essential to understanding Ronald Reagan

Any political junkie or political scientist who wants to understand Ronald Reagan the man and the politician must start with this book. Young Reagan read it when he was 11 years old and promptly decided that he wanted to become an evangelical Christian, informing his Mother that he wanted to be baptized. Reagan obviously identified with the protagonist of this story who like Reagan was the son of an alcoholic father who through the power of faith became a better man and works to change his community through his church. The book concludes with his marching off to Washington to assume a political career. Sound familiar?

Standard HBW Quality

Another salutary story showing how Harold Bell Wright earned the sobriquet of "Storyteller to America." I did not know but am not surprised by the previous reviewer's observation that Ronald Reagan read this work as a boy and was profoundly touched by it. There is something so American about Mr. Wright's works and this upright, exciting tale is no exception. Fleshed out characters populate a fast-paced allegory where true Christianity is venerated while those who are Christian in name only are seen to be lacking.
This release was one of Mr. Wright's first -if not his actual debut novel, and it made a promise that his prolific career kept.

Human nature hasn't changed much since 1902

In reading a biography of Ronald Reagan, I learned that when eleven year old Reagan finished reading this book he went to his mother and said, "I want to be like that man." Intrigued, I wanted to find out what "that man" was like. So, when I read this story I did so with an eye toward understanding Reagan and the development of his character. I was immediately struck by the similarities between Reagan and the book's hero, Dick Falkner. Both were raised in poverty, both had alcoholic fathers, both were straight shooters, and both seem to have had an abiding faith in their fellow man. I found the book's colorful language quite charming, its character development excellent, and the problems and concerns presented very true to life. As I read along I could almost sense young Reagan's character taking form. I was particularly struck by the fact that the problems of 1902 in Boyd City are in large measure today's problems---human nature seems to have changed very little over the years. My only complaint about the book is that the broad sweep evident in the early part of the story seemed to narrow in the latter pages, resulting in a somewhat quick and surprising ending based on several poorly explained coincidences. All in all, I greatly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone with a love for our 40th President or a desire to better understand him, as well as those who simply like a good story.

Conducting close readings of stories from Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese, and Tibetan literature written between the third century BCE and the late medieval period, Reiko Ohnuma argues that this theme has had a major impact on the development of Buddhist philosophy and culture.

Whether he takes the form of king, prince, ascetic, elephant, hare, serpent, or god, the bodhisattva repeatedly gives his body or parts of his flesh to others. He leaps into fires, drowns himself in the ocean, rips out his tusks, gouges out his eyes, and lets mosquitoes drink from his blood, always out of selflessness and compassion and to achieve the highest state of Buddhahood.

Ohnuma places these stories into a discrete subgenre of South Asian Buddhist literature and approaches them like case studies, analyzing their plots, characterizations, and rhetoric. She then relates the theme of the Buddha's bodily self-sacrifice to major conceptual discourses in the history of Buddhism and South Asian religions, such as the categories of the gift, the body (both ordinary and extraordinary), kingship, sacrifice, ritual offering, and death.

Head, Eyes, Flesh, and Blood reveals a very sophisticated and influential perception of the body in South Asian Buddhist literature and highlights the way in which these stories have provided an important cultural resource for Buddhists. Combined with her rich and careful translations of classic texts, Ohnuma introduces a whole new understanding of a vital concept in Buddhists studies.

Ryan, an award-winning columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, offers disturbing anecdotal evidence indicating that women's gymnastics and figure skating are physically and psychologically damaging to a majority of participants with realistic Olympic aspirations. Ryan's emphasis is on gymnastics; figure skating is a cutthroat sport, to be sure, and it encourages bulimia, but compared to gymnastics, it's almost pristine. Ryan documents that between the years 1976^-92, the average U.S. Olympic gymnast became a year younger, six and one-half inches shorter, and 23 pounds lighter. The sport not only attracts tiny girls, it manufactures them: these days the demanding physical requirements of championship women's gymnastics can only be met by prepubescent, very light, very flexible girls. Control their weight through intimidation, delay the onset of puberty via exhaustion and starvation, and voila{ }! You've got little girls forever. But by delaying puberty, one also inhibits the production of estrogen, which is essential for adult bone density. There are now former gymnasts in their twenties with the bone density of 90-year-olds. Equally damaging is the obsession with weight passed on to young gymnasts by their coaches. Onetime Olympic hopeful Christie Henrich weighed less than 50 pounds when she slipped into a coma in July_ 1994 and died. Ryan portrays the gymnastic training of Olympic hopefuls as systemic, sanctioned child abuse. I think gymnastics has a lot of wonderful qualities, such as instilling discipline

As a former elite gymnast whose coach and fellow teammates are mentioned, I think this book is dead on in exploring the world of elite gymnastics and how it is little more than legalized child abuse in my opinion. Granted, my time was the early 90s and perhaps things are different today, but I find that hard to imagine. The coaches were brutal and belittled us on a daily basis. Public shaming was how we were kept in line and would prevent us from telling our parents what really happened in practice. While I realize my comments will not be popular with a lot of people nor with people who are not at the elite level, I think this book is invaluable for parents who are considering the commitment it takes to succeed at this level. I think gymnastics has a lot of wonderful qualities, such as instilling discipline, coordination, muscle memory, fitness and time management. The extremes in this book are not realized until the elite level. I loved gymnastics until I became an elite.

Some interesting tales, but repetitive

As others have said, the same stories get repeated over and over. Where was the editor?

It was somewhat interesting, but not particularly surprising. The big difference between gymnastics/figure skating and other high-pressure sports is the young age of the elites, so it's harder for them to question the authority figures or defend themselves.

The most recent crop of gymnasts really do look healthier, so hopefully books like this have helped turn the tide.

Very good expose

I read this book with interest. It told the shocking details of the abuse the athletes of women's gymnastics and ladies' skating suffer at the hands/voices of coaches who only care about winning. Some of the techniques used were barbaric and torture for the children. They were not adults. Some died due to dangerous techniques or the prevalent eating disorders that were encouraged.The athletes were forced to compete on injured limbs and have lifelong damage.I thought the personal anecdotes made the points the author was stressing more personal and believable. Since the book was published, even more abuse and deceit have come to light in the gymnastics world.I would think carefully and read this book before encouraging a child to enter this world of abuse and disposable athletes.
