A view on Medieval/Renaissance Herbalism and Medicine

I first heard of this book as being an excellent primary source for herbs and herbalism from the 16/17th Centuries.

It is very comprehensive and aside from a listing of each herb and its properties, it has several sections teaching the fundiments of medicine of the time. It covers:

* how a herb is assigned to a planet
* how a degree of strength is determined and what it means
* what 'humours' it affects and what 'humours' (bodily fluid systems) are
* and much much more.

If you are looking for a source to use for alternate medicine then this is NOT the best starting place. There are better works of a modern nature out there for that. However, as a back-up resource or a way of learning about the time when medicine was still holistic and not too scentific then this is he book for you.

The Wordsworth edition is in paperback and easy on the pocket. This publisher takes certain classic works and keeps them in print in small runs from time to time by demand. This means that although the book may be not immediately available, it will beome available again in the near future.

17th Century Herbal Remedies

This book played an important and yet controversial role between formal medicine and herbalism.

Nicholas Culpeper(1616-1654) studied medicine at Cambridge, but gave up his studies when his fianc�e was killed in a thunderstorm. Culpeper eventually set up his own healing practice near London. He was moved by the suffering of the poor and decided to help the them by selling medicines to them at a very cheap price and encouraged them to use local species.

In the 17th century, the physicians were leaning more toward non-botanical medications such as mercury, arsenic iron and sulfur etc. It is most likely that the physicians of that day resented Culpeper's popularity and considered him a threat, since be made their secrets accessible to the common person--therefore they tried to discredit him.

The people of England due to his genuine concern for them loved Culpeper. The colonist took his herbal to the New World as a medical reference and guide of when to plant and harvest these medical plants.

His mistake was he threatening the near monopoly on medical knowledge that the College of Physicians enjoyed.

This book contains a comprehensive description of nearly all herbs along with descriptions of their medicinal properties and instructions on preparing and using them to treat many different illnesses. It also included precise botanical illustrations. For 300 years this book was the standard for herbal remedies.

Culpeper's Complete Herbal

If you have an interest in Herbs and their culinary, mystic and medicinal usages, both modern and historical, then this IS the book for you. It is beautifully illustrated and text is written in both medieval English and modern English.
Each plant (it includes some fruits and trees as well) is pictured and the habitat is described. Along with each description is any affinity to a ruling planet as well.
My only critisism is that it contains a great deal of jargon, you will need to read up on herbalism per se to understand how to make tinctures etc. That said the book is a reference to the plants not the art.
I have had my (well thumbed copy)for over 10 years now and it is a constant companion to my interests in the natural power of the Earth and her fruits.

Author David Robertson deconstructs the Constitutional Convention of 1787 - then reassembles it for the reader in topical fashion highlighting the Convention’s 'reasoning'. Each of the Convention’s major topics (e.g. electing Representatives, Selecting Senators, Congressional Independence,The Courts & The Bill of Rights, etc) that Robertson defines are ordered ‘contiguously’ so the reader can more closely follow the continuity of the debate. As example, the method of representation in the Senate is no longer spread across days or weeks: the opinions, committee results and final decisions are presented unbroken, end-to-end no longer interleaved with competing issues and concepts.

As most who read this book probably already know, there is no shortage of coverage of the Constitutional convention of 1787 - dozens of good books have covered this topic prior. A recommended ‘academic’ treatment that reads as easily as a novel is, America's Constitution: A Biography, by Akhil Reed Amar. Another favorite, still available though out of print, is Professor Clinton Rossiter's 1787, The Grand Convention: The Year That Made A Nation. Significantly though, the ‘new’ in David Robertson’s book is his 'topical' (as opposed to traditional chronological) organization of the proceedings.

Robinson takes a largely ‘hands off’ approach to the presentation of events. That is, he relies on the facts and cites, primarily’ Max Farrand’s The Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, Vol. 1-4, a compendium of writings by the actual members of the Convention (1911 - revised since) (Also see the free digital version at Online Library of Liberty). The result of his ‘hands off’ approach can be sterile and textbook-like at times with facts, thoughts and opinions of the Delegates piling up as a laundry list. Any historian’s reluctance to interpret, interpolate and even occasionally extrapolate from the known points can produce a dry result. And for me, this one is that! The author confines his guidance and interpretation to the chapter introductions...after that it's all business. It is a recommended read - well done and factual, but a number of the prior publications on this topic will still overshadow this one.

Great Book for Legal History Buffs

"The Original Compromise" is a mostly successful effort by a political scientist to unpack the logic of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It organizes the Constitutional debates into discrete themes (e.g., the judiciary, slavery, the Presidency, or commerce) and then lays out the various deals and compromises that led to the final Constitutional text. Though monotonous, the book is clearly written and heavy with direct quotes from the records of the Convention. It would be a fabulous resource for anyone interested in down-in-the-weeds details about the arguments over, say, export taxes or the composition of the Senate. Readers should know, however, that "The Original Compromise" has almost no character portraits or period "color." In fact, it barely discusses the political, ideological, or legal background of the Constitutional debates, beyond outlining how differences of size and economics divided the states and drove much of the bargaining over institutional design. Legal/constitutional history buffs will want to read "The Original Compromise" but I'm not sure whether general readers will get much out of it.

The theory behind separation of powers, the relationship between the various governmental institutions, e.g. the House of Representatives, The Senate, President, and The Supreme Court.

An excellent resource for both new and more experienced teachers

Doubtless the single greatest asset of 'Grammar For English Language Teachers' is that it helps you, as a teacher and hence a facilitator of language's meaning and form, to navigate through the oft confusing waters of English Grammar. Rather than burdening ESL teachers with yet another 'authoritative' grammar book, Parrot offers a summary of what other authors have written about a wide variety of many common grammar points, such as verb tenses and adverb classes. Should you feel that your classes' prescribed course book treats a particular grammar point inadequately, turning to 'Grammar For English Language Teachers' will help you understand what the current consensus on the matter is. Additionally, many of the grammar points under discussion have an invaluable section in which Parrot presents various common mistakes that English language learners are likely to make while using the grammar point in question.. If you have ever wondered why your students seem to instinctively dislike the formulation 'Do you do...' (hence mistakes such as 'Do you much homework usually?') or why your students are prone to saying things such as 'I can to do it', Parrot's comments will prove particularly insightful. This particular aspect of Parrot's approach to English grammar will likley be of greatest benefit to newer language teachers who are still learning the basics of their trade.

However, this book can also be of benefit to more experienced teachers as well. More experienced teachers will appreciate Parrot's refreshing treatment of the 'rules of thumb' presented in so many of the course books used in today's language classrooms. Contrary to many other grammar books, which often prescribe a few simple rules for the use of complex grammatical concepts (perhaps most infamously the oft-misunderstood Present Perfect), Parrot is often critical of many widely circulated general rules. For example, following a brief discussion on the nature of the simple past and its ostensible dependance on its 'key words' (last year, at 9 PM, yesterday, etc.), Parrot astutely points out there can also be a subjective assessment that informs the speaker's choice to use this verb tense over another. Hence why we can say 'I saw Bob at the office today', even if we understand that 'today' is still, technically speaking, in progress. Such discussions will prove to be of more benefit to teachers who have considerable experience in the classroom (2 or more years) and who can thus fully appreciate the inherent limitations of teaching learners over-generalised grammar rules. While Parrot's discussion on the shortcomings of many 'rules of thumb' may also prove to be of benefit to less experienced teachers, I would urge those who have less than 2 years experience in the field to be cautious as to when and how they present such subtleties to their students.

Everything you need in a grammar resource

As a "Pass A" student on the CELTA, I can say that this book is excellent. My CELTA center actually had it in their library and asked trainees to refer to it for assignments and lesson planning. If you are going to teach English, and teach it well, you should have access to a grammar resource that is exhaustive, and this is it. One of its strengths is that it explains common issues that ESL/EFL learners have with regards to particular aspects of grammar. So you can brush up on the past perfect continuous and then see what potential problems you may run into with your students.

Great Textbook

For understanding English grammar, you can't find a better textbook. It's designed to help you teach non-native speakers English, but for me it was most helpful in naming and explaining speaking/writing rules that I follow innately as a native speaker but never understood. Really clearly written with very helpful examples.

Tribology is the study of friction, wear and lubrication. Recently, the concept of “green tribology” as “the science and technology of the tribological aspects of ecological balance and of environmental and biological impacts” was introduced. The field of green tribology includes tribological technology that mimics living nature (biomimetic surfaces) and thus is expected to be environmentally friendly, the control of friction and wear that is of importance for energy conservation and conversion, environmental aspects of lubrication and surface modification techniques, and tribological aspects of green applications such as wind-power turbines or solar panels. This book is the first comprehensive volume on green tribology. The chapters are prepared by leading experts in their fields and cover such topics as biomimetics, environmentally friendly lubrication, tribology of wind turbines and renewable sources of energy, and ecological impact of new technologies of surface treatment.

About the Author

Michael Nosonovsky is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. For his work on the scale effect in friction and biomimetic surfaces he was honored in 2008 by ASME Burt L. Newkirk award

Prof. Bharat Bhushan is Ohio Eminent Scholar and Howard D. Winbigler Professor Director of Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio- and Nanotechnology and Biomimetics at Ohio State University. He is an author and editor of more than 10 monographs and about 700 research articles and one of the most prominent tribologists in the world.

About the Author
Gregory Drambour’s interest in the Native American culture bloomed in the California dessert sixteen years ago when he met his spirit brothers of the animal world. They led him to South Dakota, where he immediately felt at home. His experiences with teachers in that ancient land and his growing awareness that it is not what you do but how you do it that brings joy to your life, led him to wanting to share his spiritual journey with others. This is his first book.

*My close relative was personally guided by Gregory Drambour during a spirit quest experience. I had to find out for myself what this medicine did for her as she appeared changed on the inside (in the best possible way). I could not put the book down until it was finish. Recommend for the spiritual seekers who's lives are ready to be transformed. Possibly advanced or esoteric for non believers.

A Rare Pesonal View Before the Civil War

One of the few accounts of the Mexican War, Kirkham's journal contains many unique descriptions of U.S. military activity. He graduated from West Point in 1842. After serving on garrison and frontier duty, he participated in the Mexican War, where he was took part in the battles at Contreras and Clmrubusco and was wounded in the battle of Molino del Rey. He was noted for gallant and meritorious conduct in the storming of Chapultepec and assisted in the capture of Mexico City. While in Mexico he was one of a party of six American officers who climbed to the summit of Popocatapetl which hadn't been climbed since the time of Cortez.

This great book contains historical references that are connected in my Ancestry. It is also very entertaining reading of the time of the Mexican War. Somewhat graphic in the journal entries but the letters to his wife are less so...which I am sure is good!! It is an honor to be related to someone who was such a strong leader both in the army and in Oakland CA at its beginning.
