Pressure Point Fighting 101: The Professor Gots An Attitude Problem

This book has some very useful information. Vince Morris is very opinionated, and the attacks on old school karate (where he knows a great deal) and Kung fu (probably not so much there) are largely gratuitous. It is often amusing to see someone compelled to trash the very thing they are offering in order to sell the "new, improved" version. For example he carefully explains that meridian theory and pressure points are all superstitious hogwash, then proceeds to praise their effectiveness as striking points. His grasp of anatomy is basic, but many points do not correspond with readily identifiable anatomical target structures, eg nerve plexi, joints, sinuses.
To be fair, it seems as though the author has spent a reasonable effort to evaluate the effect of these strikes and test them in the real world. But, the leg kicking points he advocates as being so disabling are questionable. As evidence, in MMA bouts it is possible to see multiple full power kicks to some of these points which are of limited utility . Attacking the joint would be produce much more effective results in a real-world attack scenario.
This is a good introductory book on the "pressure point" aspect of fighting, filtered through what one assumes to be the inner teachings of Japanese or okinawan karate systems. Like many useful print sources on the oriental arts it has about 10% absolutely fabulous information, and the rest to varying degrees less so. I found his prejudices offencive, but that's the view of one little man. As someone with a broad background in the arts, I found the book mainly cooroborated what I have learned over the years. I am looking forward to researching this further. Meanwhile, since there are few books on this topic I can state that the book is a useful, if annoying, introduction to a little-presented but valuable topic.

Close quarter hand to hand combat requires all sorts of tricks and techniques for survival. This book looks at targeting the opponent's weak points that can incapacitate in a fight. For the average Joe, not really viable option. Some of us can barely pull a gun out with the sudden shock of life or death.

This book outlines basic facts and theories which leads to further exploration. No book will ever give a complete picture. But this is a guide to base further research and learning on. It is up to the person to extract and learn on their own. Had to look at the other Pressure Point books to combine what was presented here to fill in the giant puzzle of martial Arts. Would like to see an advanced version of this.

First, let me begin by saying I wish this book was published few years back, but in any case, I am happy its here now! I have found this book to be an easy-read for DUMMIES like me:). This is one of a kind book that clearly outlines different investment options available to NRI investors in India. The author is very articulate with a solid grasp on the subject (as evident from the considerable time he has spent in USA and India) and he complements his work with tons of practical case studies and examples that even new investor can comprehend and implement immediately. He clearly makes the case that time to make investment in India is now and we shouldn't miss the boat!! We all know India has been a growth machine for a last decade and more so now with Mr. Narendra Modi at the helm, so I appreciate the author for his commending work to publish the book at the most appropriate time! I went through the book cover to cover in one sitting, so it's definitely not a long and dry reading. In my view, both novice and experienced NRI investors can benefit from author's tips and insights.

Panda baby

This book with its beautiful real-life illustrations would be a great one to give a child as a gift. It would acquaint him or her with the life process of a baby panda's first year. The words and sentences are short and readable for a child in the early grades. It would also be a good read-aloud book for someone with a small child who loves to be read to. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
James E. Tisdale, PharmD, BCPS, FCCP�Dr. Tisdale received his B.Sc. Pharm from the University of Manitoba in 1983 and his Pharm.D. from S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo in 1988. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Manitoba Health Science Center in 1984 and a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Therapeutics at Hartford Hospital (CT.) from 1988-1990. He is currently Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the Department of Pharmacy Practice Personnel at the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Indianapolis, Indiana.�Dr. Tisdale’s research interests are in the area of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, focusing on: mechanisms, risk factors, and management of drug-induced arrhythmias, and drug therapy for prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation. His research has resulted in the publication of nearly 50 journal articles, 6 book chapters and 40 research abstracts in addition to his co-editorship of Drug-Induced Diseases. Prevention, Detection and Management.�Dr. Tisdale’s research has been funded by the American Heart Association, numerous foundations, and the pharmaceutical industry. From 2001-2004, he was a member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and from 2008-2009 he was Chair, Clinical Sciences Section, Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, American Pharmacists Association (APhA). Dr. Tisdale is currently President-Elect of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP).��Douglas A. Miller, Pharm.D.�Dr.�Miller is a professor at the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Detroit, where he teaches courses dealing with professional practice and patient care. He earned his BS in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and his Pharm.D. from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. His pharmacy experience includes practice in community, long term care and hospital settings. For more than 20 years, he led a team that conceptualized and implemented innovative clinical pharmacy services at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital.�Dr. Miller served as a member of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy for 11 years including two terms as board chair. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Pharmacists Association and the boards of both the Michigan Pharmacists Association and the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He is the recipient of several awards and honors including the Annual Alumni Award of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and the Distinguished Alumni Award of the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, the Pharmacist of the Year Award of the Michigan Pharmacists Association, and awards from both ASHP and APhA for outstanding practice in hospital pharmacy. There are stories of quiet, haunting horror; stories of magic and of mystery; and even a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek space opera story. This collection shows the breadth of Huff's skills, and she proves that she is quite capable of delivering a mystery with a private detective turned vampire, or an attack of a foot-and-a-half long dragon, or a tale of ghosts in the subway that will incite feelings of slight claustrophobic for a day or two.
Her characters are strong and entirely human; well, the vampire *was* a human at one point. In the story "Shing Li-Ung," Huff tells a tale of a sister and brother finding their heritage in the melting pot of cultures in modern Toronto. "The Chase is On" tells us of a starship captain, most emphatically *not* a smuggler, but she does occasionally stray on the odd side of the law. Huff even brings magic into the sports arena with the delightful and thought-provoking "A Midsummer Night's Dream Team." High Elves playing basketball? Tolkien would have conniptions--or laugh his head off in approval.

Great Short Story Collection!

So far, I haven't read a book by Tanya Huff that I haven't enjoyed, and this collection is no exception. It contains 15 of her short stories, and there's not a bad one in the bunch. Best of all, it contains four short stories involving her Blood series characters Vicki Nelson, Michael Celluci and Henry Fitzroy - always a pleasure to read.
"The Chase Is On" is a space opera, whose characters deserve a book of their own. "Underground" tells the story of what may exist in the Toronto subway system. "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is about a mother, her young daughter, and the inheritance that is much more than it appears to be. "Shin Li-Ung" is a story about Chinese tradition, gangs, and unexpected protection. "First Love, Last Love" is the ultimate tale of boys and their toys. "Word of Honor" tells of a woman who discovers her own honor while carrying out a quest for someone else. "The Harder They Fall" is about what happens when fairy tales turn real. "A Debt Unpaid" is a mining story involving personal choices and personal ghosts. "February Thaw" takes the story of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades and turns them into a modern-day dysfunctional family. "Symbols Are A Percussion Instrument" involves an cynic and a pack of tarot cards. "A Midsummer Night's Dream Team" takes High Elves and crosses them with the Olympics. And then "This Town Ain't Big Enough", What Manner of Man", "The Cards Also Say" and "The Vengeful Spirit of Lake Nepeakea" all continue the story of Vicki Nelson (ex-cop, now a vampire PI), her lover Detective-Sargeant Michael Celluci, and Henry Fitzroy (romantic novelist, vampire, and bastard son of King Henry VIII of England).
If you've never read Ms. Huff, this is a great introduction to her writing. And if you're a fan, then this is icing on the cake.

Awesome!

If you never read a Tanya Huff book this is the one to start with. The stories are amazing in their diversity! I have read just about every Huff book (except one that is out of stock). All her books are awesome! I love the Blood books, the Last Wizard, and the Quartered books. It amazes me that she has such an imagination.
This book just shows there doesn't seem to be anything she can't write about.

Important ideas, but written for 2nd-graders

I am a huge fan of Liz Ryan. I have used her job-hunting techniques for years, and am a twitter follower and regular reader of her very intelligently written Forbes columns.

This book seems so dumbed-down to me that it is hard to believe that the same person wrote this book and the Forbes columns. Did an editor push Liz to change her style to appeal to a more general readership?

Here's the example (at about 10% in) that really made it painful for me to go on reading:

"Keith is in reinvention. He feels like he's on an 'emotional see-saw'. What did Keith mean when he said that he feels like he's on an emotional see-saw? He meant that his emotions go up and down."

To be clear: I highly recommend Liz's ideas and methods. If you aren't familiar with them, I recommend that you get familiar by reading her Forbes articles. I was hoping for a well-written book that would collect all of her ideas in one place; I'm not even a fussy reader, but I was disappointed by the level at which this book is written.

I hope that this book will go to a second edition as quickly as possible, and tighten up the writing. The world needs the book that this one should have been.

This book should be recommended reading for every human being wanting to improve their quality of life, professionally or otherwise. For too long we have been taught to think of ourselves as machines and essentially slaves in the workplace, it is about time we took our power back and embraced our humanity! We each have unique and invaluable gifts to offer the world, and this book is an excellent companion in the process towards recognizing them and leveraging that knowledge in the professional world. Absolutely empowering!

Like Easing into a Warm Bath

Melanie Shull's Renew, Refresh, Refine is a Bible study book that lives up to the title's name. Like settling into a warm bath, Melanie's seven week study is warm, refreshing and cleansing. The book is designed for women, and would make a great study for a women's circle or church group as it is written by and for women who are seeking to know God in a more meaningful way. It actually stands well as a solo study, as it encourages you to seek and contemplate God and yourself, and provides a means to journal your spiritual and emotional responses to each of the seven lessons.

If you truly do as it says "sit and soak" and be honest with yourself, this study will make a difference in your walk with God. Valuable resource for learning LabView

This is a decent boot for learning LabView. As the title says, it is based on a previous edition of LabView which makes some of the screen shots a little different that the 2012 version. The basic lessons are of great value and if you are willing to look at the material being presented and not worry about the screens being slightly different due to the newer version, you will be able to learn quite a lot about using LabView. I found this book to be a very good value and I am using LabView 2012. If the screen shots had been for the 2012 version, I would have given it 5 stars.

Too much use of assistants

I bought the book with high hopes, after seeing the topics about continuous DAQ and buffers. However, what did not become clear to me from from the preview was that almost everything in the book is done using the assistants which Labview supplies. To detail the use of them is only partially helpful, as most problems with DAQ under Labview occur in cases, where the assistants can't be used, e.g. if values need to be updated, tasks modified etc.I would have expected significantly more considering the price point!

Best Beginner LabVIEW Book

I am a Mechanical Engineer and use LabVIEW everyday at work to automate testing for various engine/turbine components for my company's designs. In previous years I have read a lot of the LabVIEW books out there to try and gain more understanding of how the software works. Out of all of them, this is the one text that gave me straight forward topics and application without any 'fluff.' I learned so many key aspects of LabVIEW very quickly without having to skip pages to get to the meat of it all. It is true that (based on another commenter) the text is based on the DAQ Assistant, however if you are unfamiliar with LabVIEW the DAQ Assistant is the best way to start. Even though the book is based on LV 2010/11 you will still get the information you need if you are using 2012. This text was a real turning point for my understanding of LabVIEW and it is my best recommendation to friends and others who want to improve their beginner skills.
