Evolution and the Emergent Self: The Rise of Complexity and Behavioral Versatility in Nature, by Raymond L. Neubauer

Evolution and the Emergent Self is an eloquent and evocative new synthesis that explores how the human species emerged from the cosmic dust. Lucidly presenting ideas about the rise of complexity in our genetic, neuronal, ecological, and ultimately cosmological settings, the author takes readers on a provocative tour of modern science's quest to understand our place in nature and in our universe. Readers fascinated with "Big History" and drawn to examine big ideas will be challenged and enthralled by Raymond L. Neubauer's ambitious narrative.

How did humans emerge from the cosmos and the pre-biotic Earth, and what mechanisms of biological, chemical, and physical sciences drove this increasingly complex process? Neubauer presents a view of nature that describes the rising complexity of life in terms of increasing information content, first in genes and then in brains. The evolution of the nervous system expanded the capacity of organisms to store information, making learning possible. In key chapters, the author portrays four species with high brain:body ratios―chimpanzees, elephants, ravens, and dolphins―showing how each species shares with humans the capacity for complex communication, elaborate social relationships, flexible behavior, tool use, and powers of abstraction. A large brain can have a hierarchical arrangement of circuits that facilitates higher levels of abstraction.

Neubauer describes this constellation of qualities as an emergent self, arguing that self-awareness is nascent in several species besides humans and that potential human characteristics are embedded in the evolutionary process and have emerged repeatedly in a variety of lineages on our planet. He ultimately demonstrates that human culture is not a unique offshoot of a language-specialized primate, but an analogue of fundamental mechanisms that organisms have used since the beginning of life on Earth to gather and process information in order to buffer themselves from fluctuations in the environment.

Neubauer also views these developments in a cosmic setting, detailing open thermodynamic systems that grow more complex as the energy flowing through them increases. Similar processes of increasing complexity can be found in the "self-organizing" structures of both living and nonliving forms. Recent evidence from astronomy indicates that planet formation may be nearly as frequent as star formation. Since life makes use of the elements commonly seeded into space by burning and expiring stars, it is reasonable to speculate that the evolution of life and intelligence that happened on our planet may be found across the universe.

Review

Raymond L. Neubauer ranges over much territory, not only in the biosciences but also beyond and into the physical sciences. Evolution and the Emergent Self is easy to read and accessible, yet technical enough to be of value to a wide spectrum of scientists and students. This book is a wonderful new contribution to an interdisciplinary field of growing interest.

(Eric Chaisson, Tufts University and Harvard University, author of Epic of Evolution: Seven Ages of the Cosmos)

Ever since the universe began to present itself to scientists as a story and not a mere state, it has sought skillful narrators with the vision to tell us what's really going on there. It has found one in Raymond L. Neubauer. Aware of how difficult it has been for modern thought to reconcile the dispassionate scientific study of nature with the pulse of personality, the author succeeds admirably in pulling off the needed synthesis. Neubauer—a rare combination of scientist, poet, and seer—weaves together the latest information from biology, chemistry, physics, cosmology, and other sciences in a readable and dramatically gripping way. His artful and scientifically rigorous rendition of the cosmic story cunningly reveals to readers how their own personal existence and aspirations are stitched seamlessly into a grand cosmic narrative. A lovely and enlightening book.

(John F. Haught, Georgetown University, author of Making Sense of Evolution: Darwin, God, and the Drama of Life)

...fascinating, big-picture discussion...

(Library Journal)

It is an amazing, well-written account.

(Choice)

This is the ultimate handbook for a scientist of any type to gain an introduction to a variety of different areas of science and integrate them into his or her own perspective on the emergent self.

Pattern Recognition Across Evolutionary History
By Bryan Atkins
I loved this book. It contains vast, accrued knowledge. (I typed up 7 pages of notes.) I learned a great deal, and think it coheres a wide range of knowledge into a palatable, if incomplete, big-picture perspective. An atheist, I don’t buy his deity argument (towards the end of the book and non-obtrusive, trust me, I'm sensitive to that), but agree with him that we need some group-selection binding rituals, mechanisms at the cultural / community level that evoke an emotional response. (me: Cultural rituals that stir the neurotransmitters that foster group unity, i.e., physical and poetic rituals that yield greater group cohesion.)

Regarding entropy and its role in the generation of structure: I’d seen some material elsewhere, but Dr. Neubauer provides an explanation that helped me grasp the concept much more fully. His heated-oil and tornado examples were excellent!

I also loved his consistent reference to the increasing information content of organisms over time, as well as the increasing ability to process information.

The book is dense in the beginning, or was for me, but well worth the work.

Would highly recommend this book as I think Dr. Neubauer makes an important cultural contribution to our understanding of Reality, of what the hell is going on, long-term. Writing this, had the thought that "Evolution and the Emergent Self" is somewhat of a companion work to Robert Wright's classic: "Nonzero: the Logic of Human Destiny." (An intuition, don't feel like writing about the parallel orientation.)

Neubauer's clear rendering of many of the large, repeating patterns over the course of evolutionary history could help us, at the cultural level of organization, better understand, and navigate, exponentially accelerating complexity.

This is an odd book, but entertaining. The overall idea -- that nature uses two methods of strategizing informational responses to environmental stresses: information through fast genetic reproduction versus information through slower processes (nervous systems and brains) -- is intriguing. The chapters where this is discussed are fascinating, and the 9th chapter on thermodynamics is a good short summary of the work on dissipative structures (Into the Cool is a larger version of this). But overall the book is patchy: there are chapters on the brain, on the origins of life, of life on other planets, and a dubious final chapter on multiverses and an argument on behalf of God/Person (invoking Teilhard de Chardin). A couple of chapters on ravens, elephants, dolphins, and chimpanzees tell us nothing new, but are excellent brief summaries of the state of research into their cognitive abilities. The book would have benefitted from a stronger discussion of the elements and definitions of complexity -- different kinds of complexity and complex systems are deployed as evidence, and the overall forward thread of the argument gets lost (the introductory chapter to another recent book, Complexity and the Arrow of Time has some critically astute remarks to make about the multiple versions of complexity out there). There is also some unnecessary repetition.

Synthesis by hand waving
By whiteelephant
I am having trouble understanding the purpose of this book. One reason for writing a popular science book would be to introduce concepts to a lay audience. If this is the case then Neibauer doesn't do it particularly well. His writing is dry, he lacks any notable gift for elucidation, and he jumps all over the place from section to section. I doubt most beginners could plow through this book. The vast majority of the material has been covered in a superior fashion by other popular science authors.

Another reason for writing a popular science book would be to advance a novel or interesting interpretation to an audience who is somewhat familiar with the material. This is why I read the book, after seeing it listed as a "new synthesis" and a "Big history". But here too the book disappoints. It is mainly hand waving to tie together a hodgepodge of molecular biology, evolution, thermodynamics, anthropology, and astrophysics. He eventually concludes with a strange and cursory justification for some sort of ill-defined religious faith.

To the extent that there is a direction to this book, it is that life evolves for homeostasis. Neibauer simplifies life to two basic strategies. In r-selection, organisms are low information, and thus reproduce quickly and numerously. In K-selection, organisms are high information, and thus take a long time to reach homeostasis, and reproduce fewer offspring. The most advanced types of K-selection can use nervous systems to augment the homeostasis that is genetically coded. If there is a moderately interesting part of this book it would be chapter 9, where Neibauer discusses nonequilibrium thermodynamics, citing Eric Chiasson's "measure of the complexity of a system by the amount of energy needed to maintain its structure". In Neibauer's view, life evolves to make maximize use of the energy available to it, thus becoming a "more efficient degrader of incoming energy." In this way, the "complexity" of life increases with time by such a metric. However, Neibauer tends to play fast and loose with terms such as "complexity" and "information", so that after defining complexity in this way he then uses it more loosely, to support all sorts of hand-waving arguments - including that as humans we are "at the apex of nature."

Other topics covered include high school molecular biology, extremely basic neuroscience, chimpanzee behavior, elephants, dolphins, RNA-world, the purpose of animal sacrifice and rhythmic dance, extrasolar planets, and the anthropic principle. As I said, it's a hodgepodge - and not a good hodgepodge.

About the Author
Dugald A. Steer, Editor: "With what trepidation I sat down to give my editorial attentions to what was clearly the masterwork of a very erudite man, should be obvious to all who read this book." So begins a letter, written in 1894, from Dugald Steer to an Oxford friend. The letter goes on to explain how a chance meeting with Dr. Ernest Drake at the BULL'S HEAD TAVERN in Dorking, Surrey, made him more than a little curious. Skeptical at first, he took up Dr. Drake's offer to meet him at his house and St. Leonard's Forest, and to attend one of the S.A.S.D. meetings in London. There, he became further involved in Dr. Drake's work, joining him on an expedition to Scotland to try and estimate the hunting range of the Dornoch Wyrm. As he writes, the trip was, "a cause of some emotion, as many of my relative, particularly the Ross branch, come from so near."

Douglas Carrel, Chief Draughtsman: A native of Scotland, Douglas Carrel was clearly a dragonologist of some standing, and often accompanied Dr. Drake on some of his more fruitful expeditions. In a letter from Constantinople to the editor he says, "It is with considerable sense of honour, and no small amount of pride, that I lend my hand to the compiling of this most worthy volume . . . Ultimately, I feel that all of us—within this privileged circle in particular—are duty-bound to preserve and perpetuate the love and lore of dragons."

Helen Ward, Scientific Artist: Helen Ward trained as an illustrator at Brighton School of Art, although it is not known exactly when she came into contact with Dr. Drake. However a quote from her autobiography makes some things clear: "As a child I dreamed of dragons. When age allowed, I traveled. Unfortunately, several expeditions to Europe and one to that part of Russia known as Finland specifically to capture the likeness of a live dragon have ended in failure. The creatures seemed deliberately elusive . . .. With the help of descriptions, notes, and detailed drawings made by others I have managed to illustrate these majestic creatures to the satisfaction of those more fortunate and better-informed dragonologists."

Wayne Anderson, Pictorial Artist: Interested in cryptozoology from an early age, Wayne Anderson first came into contact with S.A.S.D. at one of their meetings in Wyvern Way in London. It was after a couple of trips with Drake—to the Alps in 1878 and to Scotland in 1880—that Wayne realized his early dragon drawings were, in fact, more life-like than he could have realised. Like most of the other collaborators on DRAGONOLOGY, he has contributed to many other books for children. He enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with Helen Ward that resulted in books such as THE TIN FOREST and THE DRAGON MACHIINE.

Nghiem Ta, Artistic Direction: Dr. Drake met Nghiem Ta in the Fukien (now Fujian) Province of China where she was working in her grandfather's bookshop. Their shared interest in dragons became evident when he showed her a copy of the fabled DRAGON SUTRA of Hong Wei, which the monks of that monastery made for him as a gift. He asked Miss Ta if such a revered object could be bound into a book and was so impressed with her work that he later invited her to London to oversee the creation of DRAGONOLOGY.

I was a little nervous buying this book for my 8 year-old nephew. I thought it might be too challenging of a read for him. However, I knew he would enjoy the paper dragons. And he/we did. We spent most of the evening assembling them, and having a great conversation about whether Dragons were "extinct" . . . or not. The book is beautiful - and tempting even for an adult. I'm certain that his imagination will be enhanced. But, I'm hoping that he gains an appreciation for reading and the incredible places that a great book can take you. This product definitely increases that possibility.

Health food with a vegan/raw bias and some very interesting creative from Iceland ... complete with gorgeous landscape photos
By M. J. Smith
Disclaimer: my tastes run in a more locavore, less powdered supplement ... more towards a millet congee than a green smoothie for breakfast. So my first reaction glancing through the cookbook was not positive. But I've been exploring Icelandic/Nordic cuisine recipes and soon discovered that the cookbook has some interesting recipes - some real gems hidden among the food-sectarian vegan/raw/health food recipes.

The first recipes to catch my attention were some basic fermentation recipes - Icelandic Kimchi: cabbage, bell pepper, radish, carrot, cauliflower in cider vinegar, tamari, coconut palm sugar, ginger, garlic, chili - and interesting variant. Two family recipes - fermented carrots with spices and fermented beets both show an originality in spicing that encourage further exploration.

Spiralized vegetables with kale pesto is a typical modern take (minus the nutriutional yeast) which becomes interesting because of the base vegetables - rutabaga, carrot, beet and zucchini. Using turnip slices as "tortillas" for avocado and nut tacos results in a flavorful and beautiful plate. Beets are featured broadly: Beet and Sweet Potato Soup; Beautiful Raw Root Salad; Baked Beet Bowl ... Cabbage appears frequently and stars in Thai Slaw with almond butter and kaffir lime juice in the dressing.

In short this is an inventive cook who knows how to maximize the usefulness of plants ... down to composting directions for those last bits and piece.

Good choice for industrial design student
By Huang Tai-Shen
This book is intended to give an overview in simple and visual terms, serve as a guide and introduction to this rather complex manufacturing field. Designer must have a good understanding of all manufacturing processes abailable, in order to have confidence that the proposed manufacturing processes is the most economical and appropriate. So, the book tried to give an overview of all materials and manufacturing methods, in order to help students to visualize and develop forms that ultimately will be manufactured.
The contests consist of metal materials, metal forming, metal cutting, metal joining, appearance finishing and coating, plastic materials, resin forming processes, machining parts, joining plastics, finishing plastics, rubbers and elastomers, natural engineering materials, composites, and rapid prototyping.

Good as a quick reference
By Industrial Designer
I disagree with the reviewer from TX. The book is written using terminology that any industrial designer should be familiar with. It would make a good textbook for design students because it gives an overview of many materials & processes. It also has charts and diagrams that make the information easy to digest. My criticisms would be that it could use more examples of final products and detailed descriptions of the materials & processes used, ie case studies. For the price, it is a thin book and could easily include a case study section. I would also like more elaboration in the "charateristics, uses and properties" sections for each material with common pitfalls to avoid.

Review
Oracle Primavera are out of the gate with version 15.1 of P6. And Paul Harris is keeping up the pace with his latest corresponding training manual, Project Planning & Control Using Primavera P6, Ver 15.1, Professional Client and Optional Client by Paul Eastwood Harris. Having a copy of this book is not an option I think it s a requirement. Primavera/Oracle continues to make their software for planning & scheduling professionals more complex by adding to its very advanced capabilities and feature set. But Paul Harris, an experienced scheduler and P6 user, not an IT person, has written this terrific training and reference manual for the P6 student/user who understands how to manage projects but needs to learn how to use the software. Among this manual s compendium of tools, techniques, tips, and traps to using Primavera s latest software package. Harris wins again by writing a clear, user-friendly book to help the reader learn and use P6 effectively and efficiently. Using the successful format from his previously published manuals for Microsoft Project, P3, SureTrak, and previous P6 versions, Harris covers the bulk of P6 s feature set by flattening and shortening the steep learning curve of this complex software package. I ve used Harris books in my company s training classes for over a decade because of his clear writing style, the depth of feature coverage, and the ability to use the book as a reference book in day-to-day use. This book follows the lead of its predecessors it guides the user through a logical sequence of understanding the principles of project management, the steps required to set-up a project, and those required to update and maintain a project. Due to the complexity and feature set of P6, Harris book is designed to be used in a 3-day training class. The exercises are available as a free download from Harris web site. Harris goes end-to-end by covering the basics of the software and its advanced functions such as User and Administration Preferences and Advanced Scheduling Options, the 3 types of calendars (unlike P3 s 2 types), Roles and Resources and multiple ways of organizing the project (WBS, OBS, Contract, Phase, etc.). Harris also does a particularly good job in explaining the differences between 3 ways of stating percent complete: Physical Percent Complete, Duration Percent Complete, and Units Percent Complete and the 4 Activity Types. He has also introduces some new topics not covered in his pervious Version 7.0 book , including Customizable Menus , Tiled and Tabbed Windows , Auto-Reorganization , Time-scaled Logic Diagrams and more. And not only does he explain how to use the program at the project level, but he also explains the parent application of Primavera s Enterprise Management which filled a huge void for me when first using the book. Since scheduling requirements vary from project-to-project and company-to-company, Harris explains how to build and maintain schedules both with and without resources (manpower, equipment, money, materials). If you are using Primavera s latest complex and IT intensive scheduling system, I urge you to use Paul Harris treatise on Project Planning & Control Using Oracle Primavera P6 Ver 8.2, Professional Client and Optional Client. Paul Harris not only knows P6; he knows how to explain how to be effective and efficient using it. That s the winning formula. --A. Larry Aaron CCE

Paul Harris has been writing books on how best to use Primavera software tools for as long as I can remember. I first started using P3 in 1985 and have been intimately involved with the software ever since. Paul Harris is an author who makes his day to day living using the tool and it shows in the details of his books. He catches the little things that pop up in the middle of an assignment and are never covered in the standard classes. This book is so comprehensive, with well placed visual pointers and guides, that depending on what chapters are selected, it can be used for a variety of classes from basic to advanced with special classes for costs and resources. This is not just a training manual but should be used as a constant reference "bible" for when you have to use parts of the software that you haven't used for a while. With a focus on application for construction, Paul does not miss anything in working through the definition of your project from the WBS, through coding, activity and relationship definition, how the critical path algorithm calculates (it's not a mystery like some other well known scheduling tools), right on through to resource and cost definition, assignment and analysis. Experience has shown that training provided by trainers who actually make a living using the tool they train on provides the best in-depth knowledge transfer experience for the student. Using a training manual that is written from the same perspective also enhances the training experience. I highly recommend this training guide/reference manual to anyone new or experienced in the Oracle| Primavera P6 environment. --Donald McNatty PSP F AACEI

As a practicing project planner scheduler and a Primavera P6 instructor, I have found this book immensely useful. The book layouts out in very clear terms, everything needed for a user to master this often-times complex application. This is the only book that I have found that comes from an objective point of view, explaining the ins and outs of this expansive program. Planning and scheduling a project can be an extremely difficult and unforgiving task for an individual or organization. Adding the need to model the delivery method in Primavera P6 can cause many unprepared users high anxiety. In his book, Paul layouts out in very clear and concise steps the project plan development process in Primavera P6 and why they are needed. I find this section in itself indispensable. As a part-time instructor of the software, I always, always, always refer my student to this section of the book so they can formulate in their minds the approach needed for creating an effective project plan. Other sections of the book also add enormous value in understanding things such project creation via the project creation wizard, importing and finally the reflection process. Other important topics covered are work breakdown structures, activities types, duration types, percent complete types, activity relationship types, baselines, as well as the updating/progressing process. Advance topics are also covered for those needing an understanding of multi-project scheduling, global functionally and software administration. The book brilliantly handles project modeling categories of task driven schedules and resource loaded schedules. Paul initially layouts out a developmental structure to expose the P6 user to methodologies associated with each modeling category and then throughout the remainder of the book, details out each of the processes. This framework can serve as a repeatable model when creating organizational processes and procedures that will maximize and individual or an organizations use of Primavera P6. As a project planner/scheduler, I use the book as an invaluable desktop reference. I find it priceless when trying to model complex delivery methods. The book is set up in a fashion that allows a user to quickly get to needed information. It also is written from an unbiased point of view explaining various pitfalls of potential methodologies to be utilized. Paul has wisely included how Microsoft Project, Primavera P3 as well as previous versions of P6 handle certain functions as compared to the current version referenced in the book. Paul s experience with these other software programs allows him to give valuable insight into these concise excerpts. He also points out in the book, areas of caution that gives the user important advice on utilizing various components of Primavera P6. If somebody would ask me what words of advice I would give a new user of Primavera P6, I would without a doubt say get training and get Paul Harris s book on Primavera P6. It is well worth the investment. --Michael J. Kehoe, PMP, MBA

He has worked in the project controls industry for a number of years and has assisted many companies in a range of industries to set up and run project controls systems. His Melbourne, Australia based company, Eastwood Harris Pty Ltd, offers project controls consulting and training services world wide with a strong focus on Microsoft Project and Primavera software. As a project controls consultant I have used a number of planning and scheduling software packages for the management of a range of project types and sizes. The first books I published were user guides/training manuals for Primavera SureTrak, P3 and Microsoft Project users. These were well received by professional project managers and schedulers, so I decided to turn my attention to developing books that demonstrated how the software is used with project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 and the PMBOK Guide. This book follows the same layout as my other books and I trust this book will assist you in understanding how to use Primavera P6 to plan and control your projects.

From Publishers Weekly
As a popular comedian, radio host and red-blooded male, Harvey doesn't have the bona fides typical to most women's relationship self-help, but he still manages a thorough, witty guide to the modern man. Harvey undertakes the tast because "Women are clueless about men," because "Men get away with a whole lot of stuff" and because he has "some valuable information to change all of that." Harvey makes a game effort, taking a bold but familiar men-are-dogs approach: if you're "cutting back" on sex, "he will have another woman lined up and waiting to give him what he needs and wants--the cookie." Several chapters later, however, he introduces the "ninety-day rule," asserting that, actually, he won't always have another woman lined up--and the only way to makes sure is a three-month vetting period. Harvey also tackles mama's boys, "independent--and lonely--women," and the matter of children in the dating world ("If he's meeting the kids after you decide he's the one, it's too late"). Feminists and the easily offended probably won't take to Harvey's blanket statements and blunt advice, but Harvey's fans and those in need of tough (but ticklish) love advice should check it out (especially the hysterical last-chapter Q&A).

From the Back Cover

Steve Harvey can’t count the number of impressive women he’s met over the years—women who can run a business, keep a household with three kids in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. So when it comes to relationships, why can’t these women figure out what makes men tick? According to Steve it’s because they’re asking other women for advice when they should be going directly to the source. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the male mindset; introduces concepts such as the ninety-day rule; and reveals the five questions women should ask a potential partner to determine how serious he is.

Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships, intimacy, and love.

A wonderful read for every independent woman.
By Maria
Loved reading this book. Period. I think it's an awesome read for those strong, independent women who sometimes don't quite know how to let a man be a man. No offense....we learn as we grow. It helped me realize that I many times think like a man and act like a man, even when I think I'm being very feminine. It helped me put some stuff into perspective while dealing with the male species. They are actually so simple, but they complicate our lives by their simplicity. So, I venture to say I think like a man and act like a lady towards men I like, but I let my masculine side show itself if I know I don't have time nor desire to attract a certain breed of men....and guess what, they leave me alone!!!

Don't Take This Too Seriously
By Inspire
If you're in a younger age group like me (18-29 years old) I wouldn't take this book seriously. Use it as a guide when dating but remember, all men (yes, even our race) aren't the same. The biggest thing to take from this book is to set standards for yourself (stick to them!) and that young guys probably aren't on track to where they want to go in life. If they aren't, then they aren't going to focus on you. If they aren't focused on where they want to go at all, then you're going to be one of those girlfriends that have him living with you without paying bills, buying food, or looking for a job. The truest thing I've read in this book is that a man WANTS to provide for you, and if he doesn't have the means to do that yet then your idea of his priorities and his own ideas will be different.

But dating and relationships go much deeper than this. I ran on the advice of this book for a year with no results. The next year, I started dating a guy who was no where near my standards, and I didn't give him the time of day. But he kept coming back willing to "pay my price" as outlined in the book. We spent a year just getting closer and becoming best friends before we realized what we had for each other was real. Ironically, when I asked when we'd make it official, he told me he couldn't because he wasn't where he wanted to be financially or in his career and he didn't have the means to provide for me better than I could provide for myself.

Long story short, we're happily together after we worked out the kinks, but don't take this book word for word. It's a good start if you are just starting to get serious about dating but it is not the holy bible of relationships. It's good for getting your confidence up, because the problem with us today is that we want to be Wonder Woman but are so quick to give our everything to whatever handsome guy wants to accept it, then throw our money, love, and time in his face thinking that will make him love us back. It doesn't.

Bottom Line: I recommend giving this book a try just for the info it has that other books don't. But make sure you read other books in comparison.

How to play cruel games on each other
By Sarah
I hope women do NOT go this way. I wanted to woo a man who played these hard-to-get games and this book would probably have helped me stay in that relationship longer, but I'm so glad I cannot play these games longterm and now I have a wonderful man who doesn't need these DYSFUNCTIONAL tips.

This book assumes that all men want women who reject them and if you dare to be nice to them, they will reject you. There are lots of those men out there, and they are SICK! You need to simply DUMP men like that. Don't buy books like this that tell you how to manipulate each other and build a dysfunctional and unstable relationship. You deserve a far better man than the kind this book wants you to manipulate.

Boston Jacky: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Taking Care of Business (Bloody Jack Adventures), by L. A. Meyer

Jacky Faber makes waves, even when docked in her adopted city of Boston to attend to the business of Faber Shipping Worldwide. With big dreams and perhaps too much exuberance for the Puritan populace, she quickly finds herself at odds with the Women’s Temperance Union and a town roiling over the arrival of hundreds of Irish laborers, brought in on Jacky’s Lorelei Lee. Thwarted at every turn by her enemies, Jacky is forced to acknowledge her shortcomings—and possibly lose her beloved Jaimy Fletcher. Will the impulsive Jacky Faber finally get her comeuppance?

From Booklist
Jacky Faber romps through another set of adventures when she returns to Boston and to the deck of the Nancy B. Alsop. Many, many characters from previous books make appearances here, but none is more notable than Jacky’s long-lost love, Jaimy, so heavily disguised that she doesn’t recognize him. Since fans of the Bloody Jack Adventure series know better than to hope for a conventional, romantic ending, they’ll enjoy the plot twist Meyer delivers in its place. The large cast of characters results in a panoramic view rather than a sharply focused drama, but look for Jacky at the focal point of every scene. Grades 8-10. --Carolyn Phelan

Chapter 1

“Boston! Hooray!” I exult, as the tall church steeples of the city come into view.
I’m up on the crow’s nest as lookout as we enter the harbor, and I can barely contain my excitement. The USA again! I’m free and not being chased for once, and I will see my friends soon! And, and, oh, joy!
The schooner Margaret Todd put her nose into Massa- chusetts Bay this morning and headed north up the harbor with a fine wind behind her—which was very good, for it means we shall not have to row her into the dock. That is backbreaking work, and we poor sailors are glad not to have to do it.
We slip between Lovell and Great Brewster Islands and then hard left! and so we turn, leaving Thompson to starboard, and then there’s Spectacle Island—getting close now, girl—another small turn to the right, and then into Boston Harbor. I can smell the fish markets from here and to me, after four weeks of clean, bracing salt-sea air, it smells right good. I am a city girl at heart, when not sailing, and can put up with a bit of stench when I hit the land.
“On deck there!” I shout down. “Small lugger to starboard! Should pass us to the right, Sir, no trouble. two barges coming down to port. Well clear!” There is traffic in this fine harbor, Boston being a bustling port and all. Captain S. F. Pagels looks up at me and nods. He is a thoroughgoing seaman and knows this harbor like the back of his hand.
“Steady as she goes,” he says to his helmsman, a man as seasoned in his skill as is the captain in his.
Then, from the topmast, a voice is raised in song . . .

Oh, I thought I heard the Old Man say, Leave her, Jacky, leave her!
Tomorrow you will get your pay, And it’s time for you to leave her!

I grin down at the rogues on deck who are giving voice to this song. The crew know I’m getting off in Boston and feel it right and proper to sing me off with this song. They and the Margaret Todd are headed up to Eden, their home port on Mount Desert Island, and they are glad to be getting back to wives and sweethearts, but not, I believe, so glad to get rid of me. They are a jolly pack of dogs, and I will hate to see them go.

The work was hard an’ the voyage was long, Leave her, Jacky, leave her!
The sea was high and the gales was strong, And it’s time for you to leave her!

It’s like a tradition, an end-of-voyage song, wherein the crew get to air their grievances and get back a bit at the captain. That’s why it’s always sung only at the end of a voyage, and not during . . . and only if the captain is a decent cove, which captain Pagels, praise be, is.

The grub was bad an’ the wages low, Leave her, Jacky, leave her!
But now once more ashore you’ll go, It’s time for you to leave her!

Oh, and I am ready to leave her, count on that. true, the wages were, indeed, low, but the Maggie Todd got me from Gibraltar to here, and for that I thank her. She did take her time getting here—sailing first to Savannah to drop off her cargo of Spanish cloth, then down to Jamaica to pick up kegs of molasses. and oh, those barrels were heavy and I was not spared in the loading of them, no I was not . . .
The winds were foul, all work and no play, Leave her, Jacky, leave her!
From the Liverpool Docks up to Boston Bay, It’s time for you to leave her!

And then back up to charleston to deliver and to take on mail and then on to New York. Finally, here to Boston, dear old Beantown, oh, yes!

We’ll make her fast an’ stow our gear, Leave her, Jacky, leave her!
The girls are awaitin’ on the pier, And it’s time for you to leave her!

Hmmm . . . There is a girl awaitin’, but she ain’t on the pier, and she ain’t up here in the foretop, neither. oh no, she’s right down below on the deck, and I know her eyes are filling with tears. This was the way of it:
I had shipped on this bark at Gibraltar in my sailor-boy disguise, something I have done before and generally gotten away with. I figured things would go easier on me that way and, too, I would be paid seaman’s wages, which was good since I was dead broke. If I had announced I was a girl, they would not have taken me on as a member of the crew, and with no money to pay my fare, I’d still be standing on that dock in southern Spain.
The trip over was a good one—all us coves sitting around the potbellied stove, swapping tales and singing songs—all cozy in this winter crossing, when we weren’t up on deck freezing our toes off, that is. The crew was mostly older men—middle-aged and well-seasoned sailors—and then me in my seaman’s togs. There was, however, a compli- cation. Captain Pagels had his wife and daughter along, and therein lay the problem, for the daughter, Griselda, took an immediate shine to young Jack the Sailor.
Why did she like me? I dunno . . . But then, why shouldn’t she? She was at the starry-eyed stage of her life when all was potential, shiny and new, and nothing was old and dull . . . so she did not necessarily dream of the heavily whiskered men of her father’s crews. and here’s downy-cheeked Jack the Sailor, no threat at all to her maidenly virtue, a virtue I sensed early on she was right willing to give up to young Jack. Down in the fo’c’s’le, we had many a fine story and song. I got not a few ribald gibes concerning the captain’s lovely daughter, but I bore up under it, blushing and looking away.
So I very carefully gave her a shipboard romance, since there seemed no way to avoid it . . . and it was a very innocent romance you may be sure. She was but fifteen and quite pretty and, I gotta say, for a kid, she was quite amorous.
So what was the harm in that? None, as I see it. She’ll always remember this cruise most fondly, as memories seem to glow more golden as the years pass. Ah, yes, but what of the parting that must now come, and what to do about a young girl’s tears?
This morning, before we entered the harbor, she came to me by the base of the third mast, well out of sight of her father, who stood on his quarterdeck, preparing to con his ship down the channel. I took her shoulders in my hands, looked deep into her brimming blue eyes, and spouted out the most awful, high-sounding nonsense . . .
“Oh, Griselda, it grieves me to the depths of my poor soul, but I must go now and leave you, love. I know that it is the best thing to do for I am but a poor, penniless sailor and you are the fine daughter of a rich merchant captain. While I will always be poor and penniless, you shall go out in society and become a fine lady. You will be admired by all and you shall marry a great man. and I . . . I will remain married to my true mistress . . .”
At this point I put my hand on my breast and look out across the water and conclude with a heavy sigh . . .
“. . . the sea.”
Yes, I had a hard time keeping a straight face, but I do think I let her down as easy as I could. She snuffled and buried her face in my front, and we remained that way till I was called away to the foretop.

Now I thought I heard the Old Man say, Leave her, Jacky, leave her!
One more good heave and then belay, And it’s time for you to leave her!

And it is, indeed, time for me to leave her, so off the Margaret Todd I bounce. On my way down, right by the gangway, amidst all the cheers and catcalls, one grizzled old cove, Thaddeus Smathers, by name, grabs my arm. He winks broadly at me and whispers into my ear, “Ye didn’t fool me for a minute, no ye didn’t, Jacky Faber! Good sailin’ to ye, lass!” I gulp and press on. One more soulful glance back at Griselda, standing bereft at the rail, and I am off.
So I rambled back into Boston town, and here I am again, stepping onto the old familiar ground.
I mean to go to the Pig and Whistle, see Maudie, take rooms, order up a bath, and generally freshen up before going to visit my other friends. and I need to check out the lay of the land. After all, there are some around here who feel quite strongly that I should be serving out my life sentence in the penal colony in Botany Bay, Australia. So I must be careful.
Ah, dear old Boston, I think as I walk up State Street.

Poor Jack the Sailor, home at last, clad in sturdy sailor gear with seabag on my shoulder, and soaking in all the old familiar sights. There’s Ezra Pickering’s office, and there’s the faade of Faber Shipping Worldwide. Oh, how it gladdens my heart to see it, the sign above its doorway all gilt and gold and black and deep maroon and the Blue anchor flag flapping merrily above.
But no, I do not stop. I press on and round the corner, my dry throat ready for a mug of the Pig’s good strong ale, and . . . and then I am shocked to my core.
The Pig is dead.
The dear old Pig and Whistle is closed. Heavy boards are nailed over its windows and door, and its sign bearing the happy fat pig playing on his pennywhistle and dancing a merry jig is faded and peeling, and it hangs lopsided by a single hinge, twisting sadly in the breeze.
As I stand disconsolate, I hear what sounds like a parade coming down the street . . . There is the beating of drums and the shouting of a chant.
“Suffrage, now! Votes for women, now! Equality, now! Now! Now!”
Then, from around a corner comes a crowd of women, formed in a column of three rows across, all dressed in black, looking very grim, and most bearing banners of some sort—all of which echo the chant: Suffrage, now! Votes for women, now! Equality, now! Now! Now!
I stand astounded, for whom should I see in the third row, second rank, holding a sign and looking very resolute, but . . .
Amy? Amy Trevelyne?

“Amy!” I call out and wave, unable to suppress my joy at seeing my dear friend yet again.
Shocked, she looks over to see this merry sailor boy clad in white canvas trousers, middy top, and sailor cap, with seabag on shoulder and open-mouthed smile on face.
She drops her sign and gasps, “JACKY?”

"Only Bitterness Remains"
By FredTownWard
What a wretched, unpleasant read!

Though I had little hope this book would offer a resolution to the most star crossed relationship in literary history, I did hope for a somewhat light romp of an adventure in Jacky Faber's adopted hometown of Boston. Instead I got another wallow fest in misery, degradation, and betrayal for the title character, somewhat like the similar wallow fest in "The Wake of the Lorelei Lee", but with two important differences. The first is the placement. In the earlier book the depressing degradation is mostly at the beginning of the book, allowing for a happy ending; in this book it is mostly at the end, making for a truly unhappy ending. The second is the source. In the earlier book her enemies are the ones doing this to her; in this book too many of the ones doing this to her are her friends or at least people she's done a lot of good for. (Jacky has a lot of faults, but stinginess in sharing her help and her good fortune with her companions is not one of them.) Even long suffering Jaimy Fletcher, who Lord knows had reasons enough to swear off Jacky for good several books ago, ends up doing so (Any bets on how permanently?) in this book due to trickery and treachery, and, it must be added, with a good deal of hypocrisy considering his own past conduct.

I'm absolutely confident author L. A. Meyers will get everything back to normal in the next book, but I'm tired of what passes for normal in a Jacky Faber book, and I've only read four: The Wake of the Lorelei Lee: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, on Her Way to Botany Bay, The Mark of the Golden Dragon: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Jewel of the East, Vexation of the West, Viva Jacquelina!: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Over the Hills and Far Away, and Boston Jacky: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Taking Care of Business.

I'm tired of Jacky being faithful to Jaimy in her fashion by doing everything short of sex with every good looking male she encounters. I'm tired of Jaimy being insanely jealous when his own conduct does not give him any right to. I'm tired of the increasingly contrived machinations that keep these two apart while never quite convincing them to give up on each other. I'm tired of villains who return book after book. I'm tired of suitors who never give up. I'm tired of trust given and betrayed and given again and betrayed again. And even though as far as I know she's only been at it for two books now, I'm tired of Jacky Faber's all purpose non-lethal method of dealing with bad guys being to trick them into ingesting opium or hallucinogenic mushrooms and thus getting them uncontrollably randy and naked in prudish public.

Most of all I am tired of reading a new Jacky Faber book and feeling I've read it before.

The Thankfully Continued Adventures of Jacky Faber
By Pampered.Pixie
In this, the eleventh installment of the Jacky Faber books, Miss Faber returns to Boston where she faces her usual trials with a cast of largely familiar characters. While it is true these adventures have been going on for quite some time (this is the eleventh in the series after all) I'm so grateful to Mr. Meyer for his continued writings on the doings of Jacky Faber. I have been loving these books since I was twelve. Now I am seventeen and I anxiously await each one as it comes out. Jacky manages to make her way around the world during a very historically exciting time. In "Boston Jacky" the reader gets a picture of the reluctance early America had in accepting Irish immigrants due to their willingness to work rough jobs for low wages. The early American temperance and suffrage movement is also examined and I personally enjoyed reading about the conservative nature of the women hoping to gain the right to vote. (In my history classes, its been taught that women deserved the right to vote and they got that right in 1912 but we often don't address their political stands so it was interesting to read through Jacky's perspective.) I am unbelievable frustrated with romantic aspects of these books but I understand that it is the style of series and were everyone happy and settled down with their one true love it would be a rather uninteresting story. For those feeling "tired" or "worn out" from years of these adventures I want to remind you that these are adventure books and the structure is like that of many old adventure series be them movies, TV shows, radio shows, or other books. There is a hero or in our case a heroin (Jacky) seeking love (Jaimy) and hopefully some adventure and riches which often results in mishaps. I encourage readers who are unsure whether to continue reading these books to think of it as a wonderful time with characters you know and enjoy reading about. These books are a joy to read and have gotten me through the start of many school years. I would absolutely recommend this book and I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of it and I could not put it down!

I look forward to your next adventure Jacky!

Jacky Faber's adventures, continued
By M. Tanenbaum
In her latest adventure, the spirited pirate, schoolgirl, and current ceo and pub owner Jacky Faber finds herself at odds with the law, old friends, and even the Women's Temperance Union. Although it won't win awards for historical accuracy or realism, the series lives up to its reputation as a unique rousing adventure starring a plucky heroine who stands out from the crowd of boy obsessed shoppaholics who dominate novels aimed at teenage girls. Luckily for readers, Jacky spends more of the novel singing jaunty sailor tunes, shocking the political establishment, and performing in her own cliched yet hilarious plays than she does pining after her lost lover, Jaimy Fletcher, who was featured too prominently in many of the previous novels. This installment is a perfect example of why Jacky's exploits never fail to entertain readers or become too repetitive, even after she has traveled halfway around the world.
