Picking up where the cliffhanger left off

I know I am kind of repeating my review from part one, but I really feel the same way. The characters were great, likable, easy to relate to, and easily understood. Natalie and Ryan are still a wonderful couple and I love that they are sticking to one another through everything-including the many difficulties they face as a couple. I still feel that part one and part two should have been combined into one complete book. As part two ended, the story could be left alone or another book could follow if the author chooses. I hope she does choose to continue the story in the future because I still have some unanswered questions and hope for this couple. However, I could be content with the ending as it is as well.

Beta reading for Element, Part 2 by author CM Doporto, went smoothly with no bumps on the road in sight! After beta reading and reviewing Element, Part 1 (which is highly suggested, but not required) my anticipation level was to the max, and this author never misses a beat. With a more than solid storyline and maturing character development, this read was extremely hard to put down. Lies...deceipt...truth...Leaving you on the edge of your seat til the very end. I absolutely love the cover too! I'm rating this read 5 Stars for amazeballs storyline, insanely good character development, and superb editing.

Kind of Better than the first...

Cover: Better than the first one...

Natalie:

She seems very trusting in this book... she was ready to be probed and poked just to have a cure... I know someone will do anything just to be normal again it's just that she seems naive for trusting someone they barely know...

Story:

Let's just say that I'm 50-50 with this one... As I said in the first book, the idea itself was interesting but the conversations were not that good... they still sound corny and cheesy... and I still wasn't able to connect with the characters...

But on the good side there were some povs that were added giving the readers idea on what is happening in the other characters...

And then my suspicion was confirmed... I really don't like reading books wherein the character is being forced to do something he or she doesn't want to... I feel pity for him or her and hatred to the one forcing him or her...

Overall, it was a nice read but not enough for me to like it... their conversations were a major factor why I'm not really a fan of it... but I want to tell you that the ending was a cliffhanger but not really a cliffhanger, well at least for my it was like that...

The three-level research design used covers the study of the institutional framework, the study of translators working in specific institutional settings, and the study of translated documents and their source texts. This is therefore a study of both texts and people in their institutional habitat. Given the methodological focus of the volume, the different methods and data are outlined in independent chapters: the institutional framework of translation (institutional ethnography), the physical location of the unit (observation), translators' own views of their role (focus group discussions), and a sociologically-oriented text analysis of a sample document (shifts analysis).

- A great author, that makes an effort to write about areas in game design not yet covered by existing literature.

- Confuses magic with occultism, mythology and religion, and just defines magic as anything supernatural.
- Too much a mix of different topics, lacking a clear organization.
- Does not go into much depth of the history and anthropology that would be be required to create a deeper meaning beyond just manipulating symbols.
- Littered with useless code snippets that are syntactically and semantically incorrect.
- Way too expensive.
- Not readable on a mobile device.

Raymond C. Speciale is a practicing attorney with Yodice Associates, counsel to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) for over 40 years. During more than 15 years as an aviation attorney, he has provided legal services to hundreds of aircraft owners and pilots. Mr. Speciale is an active pilot and flight instructor (CFII). Also a certified public accountant, he has written several booklets and articles for the AOPA related to aircraft ownership and taxation issues. He teaches law and accounting classes at Mount St. Mary's University, where he is an assistant professor. Mr. Speciale is a member of the Lawyers-Pilots Bar Association and the National Transportation Safety Board Bar Association. He lives in Frederick, Maryland.

A Good Introduction to Aviation Law

As a practicing attorney, I found this title to be a good introduction to the basic issues involved in aviation law. While it is certainly no "how to" manual for practicing attorneys, it provides the basic underpinnings of the major issues involved.

The end is getting closer, but has not yet arrived, in this fourth entry in the TUNNELS series. It all started with Will and Chester digging tunnels, trying to find Will's missing archaeologist father. After digging DEEPER and experiencing FREEFALL into the subterranean depths of the Earth in books two and three, the two boys continue to battle the malevolent Styx, and to survive in book four—but in different arenas. Chester joins Drake and a possible Styx ally on the surface, while Will, his father, and Elliott (the girl Drake trained to fight) encounter pyramids and a World War II German Army deep in the bowels of the Earth. The Styx are hot on their trail because the teens stole the virus created to destroy all humans. There is tragedy and triumph as the action switches back and forth, following the adventures of both sets of characters. This novel begins with a bang, and the pace never falters. There is very little background information, so newcomers should start with Tunnels. But fans of the series are going to have a hard time putting it down. There is a lot of action; lively dialogue; diabolical villains and feisty teens; clever cat-like companion hunters; things that blow up; torture and mind manipulation; family and friends in danger; and trust and betrayal. Tune in for more fast-paced action and edge-of-your-seat suspense in the next installment (SPIRAL, Fall 2012 publication). Nonstop adventure--looking forward to more

In CLOSER, three of our heroes are stranded in a strange world called the "Land of the Second Sun," which is located at the very center of the earth. But none of them are overly concerned with their predicament. In fact, they all feel relatively safe and even satisfied with their circumstances. In the case of Dr. Burrows, he is ecstatic to discover a new world to study and spends his hours crawling over the bizarre pyramids, recording everything in his journal. His son, Will, is happy to help, grateful to be with him and even more thankful to spend some time alone with Elliot as she scouts out the area, finding food and shelter.

However, their peace is about to end. Another group of people call this place home: Germans who sought a safe refuge during WWII and who have successfully created a new civilization called New Germania. But even they aren't the real threat to Will and company; that comes when the evil Rebecca twins finally catch up to our heroes. They are desperate to recover the vial of the nasty virus that Will and Elliot had stolen, and they will do anything --- even murder --- to get what they want.

Will's best friend, Chester, finally reaches the earth's surface again, along with Martha, the strange, somewhat unstable woman they had encountered in the depths. Chester is eager to ditch her and finally get back home to let his parents know he's okay. But Martha has developed an attachment to Chester and isn't about to let him go. The "warped, psycho granny," as Chester calls her, locks him in the closet of an abandoned house and has no intentions of ever losing him. Chester can only think of one way out of his nightmarish situation: try to get a signal to Drake.

Meanwhile, Drake has been rescued from almost certain death by a former Limiter who claims to be Elliot's father. He proposes to help Drake in exchange for assistance in getting Elliot back safe and sound. Drake has enough experience in the espionage games to know not to trust anybody, but with Eddy's help, Drake could put an end to the Styx plans of creating new viruses they want to use on the surface population in order to take over the entire world, inside and out. Dare Drake trust a former enemy? Dare he not?

This fourth installment of the Tunnels series is smoking! With our heroes split up into different parts of the globe (both inside and out), CLOSER is almost like many separate stories interwoven into one big book (and it is big at over 500 pages). The point of view is constantly switching among Will, Chester, Drake and others as they all battle their own exciting circumstances, which keeps the story fresh and renewed with plenty of cliffhangers to propel the pages. Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams offer lots of espionage, military-type tactics and weaponry, airplanes, helicopters and motorcycles, a wonderful sense of imagination, and even brief flaunts of humor. Their characters are interesting and well-rounded, displaying both faults and feelings along with bouts of heroism. The authors also do a tremendous job comparing different cultures and governments, which is one of the book's themes.

Gordon and Williams have two more books planned for the series, with the next one titled SPIRAL. So the end is near, but there are still mega amounts of pages to enjoy in the meantime. CLOSER offers a nonstop, subterranean adventure with a steady supply of surprises and suspense.

A different ending

I love this series- great for kids. This book keeps you interested the whole way through with a great plot, action scenes and many different story lines. The ending of the book left me a little disappointed. I am not sure if the series will continue, but I was hoping for a better closing to all the story lines.

Good book. Lots of twists and turns. The valley of the second Sun and the hollow earth theory were especially interesting. The underground WWII era German city they stumbled upon was very imaginative. Best book in the series yet by far.

About the Author
Aviator and sailor Sir Francis Chichester is best known for being the first and fastest person to sail around the globe single-handedly in The Gipsy Moth IV. Following this achievement he wrote several books and made films about his sailing experiences.

Born in Devon and educated at Marlborough College, Chichester emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 18 and spent ten years in forestry, mining and property development. On his return to England he learned to fly, and in the original Gipsy Moth seaplane he became the first person to complete an East-West solo flight across the Tasman Sea, for which he was awarded the inaugural Amy Johnson Memorial Trophy.

Chichester wrote many popular books on his air adventures, and during WWII he wrote the manual that single-man fighter pilots used to navigate across Europe. In 1964 Chichester published his autobiography, the bestselling The Lonely Sea and the Sky, and was knighted three years later for 'individual achievement and sustained endeavour in the navigation and seamanship of small craft'.

Chichester used his navigation experience to create a successful map-making company, Francis Chichester Ltd, which today still publishes pocket guides and maps which are sold throughout the world.

Actually, a book about "British understatement" ...

I recall the thrill and deep emotion that came over me in 1967 when I saw TV coverage of England welcoming home Francis Chichester (soon to be "Sir Francis") from his "singlehander" circumnavigation of the planet. (I still tear up thinking about it.) I am not especially Anglophilic, but the man and the moment epitomized for this American all that is great and good about England and her people, even if the British Empire ain't what it used to be (which is very likely a good thing).

Alas, almost four decades later, I didn't find Chichester's memoir of the voyage an especially engaging read. "British understatement" is an understatement. One can admire the man's restraint in not overdramatizing the more perilous episodes of the voyage -- capsizing off Australia, rounding the Horn, etc. -- but the drama that certainly did accompany this maritime feat is hardly there at all. Nor is there a strong sense of the emotional and physical toll on a 65-year-old man (however fit) of operating a 53-foot sailing vessel 'round the clock, alone, for 226 days, snatching sleep a few hours at a time. Much of the routine is ... well, routine, and it begins to run together after a few chapters.

Chichester's mostly matter-of-fact recounting of the voyage is full of details about sails, masts, booms, navigation and other nautical equipment and tasks, details that are likely going to leave most 'lubbers (such as myself) a bit glassy-eyed. Find yourself a sailor's glossary, because there's none in this account. Although the book contains boat diagrams and a sail plan, keeping track of the genoas, staysails, and jibs becomes stultifying. There is also several pages' discourse on supplies and foodstuffs one would want for a long ocean voyage. (Take plenty of fresh eggs, but paint them with beeswax before stowage!)

In an epilogue, J.R.L. Anderson, himself no slouch of a sailor, and a more polished writer, succeeds in putting Chichester's achievement in perspective. "He has succeeded in making dreams come true, his own private dreams, and the dreams that most men have from time to time ... He has lived not alone his dreams, but ours too." Only occasionally does Sir Francis himself grant us such a personal insight, before returning to his litany of sail-setting, navigating, and trying to eat and sleep on the rolling sea in a boat heeled over 20 or 30 degrees.

All in all, a great man, a great feat, a disappointing book. If you are a yachtsman, or want to be, or if you are planning your own nautical sojourn, you may find this book more informative and entertaining than I did. Perhaps "British understatement" is what this volume is really about, after all.

Sailing with a 'Smoking'

Chichester's story-- of his nine-month single-handed circumnavigation of the world with just one port of call-- is laconically told. His bravery, focus and endurance was applauded by a crowd of thousands who celebrated his return to London. His worst moments were the realization that he had almost depleted his stock of his favorite drink, gin; whenever his solitary journey was interrupted by news-hungry reporters in boats or airplanes; whenever he had to prepare for and deliver a radio message to his newspaper sponsors. His best moments were consuming simple meals; playing music taped for him by his son; toasting his wife with champagne on their wedding anniversary while wearing his 'smoking'. Chichester is a man with a huge amount of will power and modesty. When he speaks of discomfort, danger, illness, injury, fear (and he experienced much of each during his journey), he brushes it aside as a necessary part of the challenge he accepted. He is a solitary man, sustained by his belief that he can achieve his extraordinary goal, and by his love for, and support from, his wife and son.

After watching "Deep Water", I became very interested in Chichester, Crowhurst, and Moitessier. As one who typically reads fiction (i.e. Clive Cussler, etc.), Chichester's account of his circumnavigation was evocative and revealing. It's hard to imagine nine months of solitude, danger, difficulties, and the perpetual needs of the boat. Apparently, he kept a very detailed journal because you feel as if you were sailing with him day by day. Who knew endless miles of open ocean could offer such variety and excitement? Chichester is very candid, descriptive, personable, and endearing. However, my next book to read is "The Long Way". No breaks in Sydney for that guy!

Suggesting that memory works in the same way, Donohoe opens productive ways to think about lived experience by considering how such experience always occurs somewhere. Focusing largely on the lived dimensions of monuments and memorials, Janet Donohoe draws on phenomenological and hermeneutic perspectives to explore the complex relationship between place, memory, and history. The study includes a helpful overview of phenomenological research on place; particularly valuable is Donohoe’s perceptive clarification of phenomenologist Edmund Husserl’s co-constituted concepts of homeworld and alienworld. She examines how places provide not only settings for human life but also help shape memory, tradition, and a lived sense of history. Lastly, Donohoe offers a thoughtful philosophical discussion of the personal and collective value of monuments and memorials as they evoke existential and historical meanings through an intensified ambience of place. Donohoe’s book is an important phenomenological contribution to the growing interdisciplinary literature on place studies. (David Seamon, Kansas State University)

This study provides a unique insight into common experiences and desires to return to important places of our past and to establish places of memory. Drawing upon philosophers such as Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Gadamer, and Ricoeur, Janet Donohoe uses the idea of a palimpsest to argue that layers of the past are carried along as traditions through places and bodies such that we can speak of memory as being written upon place and place as being written upon memory.

Musical criticism at the highest level

Sir Donald Tovey is widely recognized as the leading music critic of the early 20th century writing in English. These essays are all interesting, often provoking, but it is essential that you can read music as there are many notated examples. I have given this collection only 4 stars because these essays are all old (Tovey died in 1940) and many of his conclusions may be superseded by later research; nevertheless, they're all worthwhile if only as a representation of the best musical scholarship of the time.
