Wow what can I say. The author definitely knows his stuffs. I'm a successful professional and I'm always looking to keep my knowledge of how to succeed in this world. This book did not disappoint. I know that because I'm already using some of the tips he recommended. However, I discovered new tips as well. I wished this book was available when I was in high school!! He teaches any man how to dress for all occasions. Whether you're a young man trying to impress your lady, or you're going to your first business interview. Pretty much all scenarios are covered. So get this book and read it from cover to cover, then read it again. You're welcome!

This is a great buy if you want to radically change your life. Clothing is she single most effective way of changing how others perceive and treat you, and that applies to the professional world as well as to dating. Arthur Thomas Hatto, FBA (1910 2010) was a scholar of medieval German literature and, especially after his retirement from the University of London, where he served as Professor of German from 1953 to 1977, the comparative study of oral heroic epic poetry. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the School of Oriental and African Studies, of which he had served as a Governor, and a Corresponding Member of the Finno-Ugrian Society. His other publications include translations from Middle High German poems for Penguin Classics: Tristan (1960), the Nibelungenlied (1965), and Parzival (1980); the edition and translation The Memorial Feast for Kokotoy-Khan (Kokotoydun A ): A Kirghiz Epic Poem (1977); general editorship of Traditions of Heroic and Epic Poetry (1980 1989), the two-volume proceedings of the London Seminar on Epic, which Hatto chaired from 1964 to 1972; Essays on Medieval German and Other Poetry (1980); and The Mohave Heroic Epic of Inyo-Kutavere (1999).

Great literature, great edition

Around the middle of the 12th century, an author we know only as Thomas wrote a French version of the popular legend of the star-crossed lovers Tristan and Ysolt (usually known in English as Tristram and Yseult). Thomas may have been French or English. Most of his poem has been lost. A generation or two later (the dates for both authors are uncertain) a Strassburger named Gottfried wrote a German version of the story, using Thomas as his source. Gottfried died before completing the work. By extraordinary coincidence, the bulk of what remains of Thomas's work is the very part that Gottfried did not live to write. Thomas carries on exactly where Gottfried leaves off. The obvious thing therefore, is to translate Gottfried and Thomas in one volume, to give a complete narrative. That's what Hatto does, in his usual accurate, precise and elegant English, in this excellent Penguin Classics edition.

Hatto's editorial contributions, consisting of an Introduction and 7 Appendices, give as much information as most readers will require. One can sense the effort of will Hatto needed, to stop himself writing volumes more.

So how good a story is it? Well, it's a classic romance, from a time when sexual relations were being redefined, and which has provided inspiration for countless other romances since, most notably Romeo and Juliet. It does not read like a modern novel, for the very good reason that it isn't one. It is a medieval German poem translated into modern English prose, so much of the underlying social logic, and many of the aesthetics, will inevitably be lost to us. But it does contain some very memorable moments and it stands as an important milestone on the progress of western literature, and as an invaluable insight into European medieval culture.

Best Version of Tristan with extras and great Translation

While not many preople read Strassburgs "tristan" it has been around for 800 years for some reason. It must be because it is a good. The story itself has been told and retold in opera and whats present in this version is an embelishement of the english "Tristram" romance - much of which is lost. This version is translated by the great A T Hatto who was among the greatest scholars of Middle Ages Romances. Though originally translated in 1961 or a story first appearing in 1215 this book is suprisingly readable and far more engrossing than Parsival or some of the other Aurthurian romances.

But if you are reading this book I assume you are not reading this simply for enjoyment while waiting for Dan Brown's next Work. You are probably reading this in some sort of acedemic setting whether it be in univesity or your own pursuit. Here is where the book should be really useful. The introductrion which includes much of the orginal text and explains how the story developed into what makes up the body of the text. There are footnotes on nearly every other page and while I prefer more I wont say that they are necessary.

This is a great work for study of Middle Ages German literature. This work was written in the 13th Century which is the start of a great awakening of the spirit and the time that can be called the high middle ages. Beyond this this is also a great romance and a readable story. No matter on what level you choose to read this work it should be satisfying and be a work what you will want to reread.

Excellent!

I wish I could get every romantic idealist I know to read this book. It's the core stuff of romantic obsession... and if you haven't studied the subject in depth, it's probably not what you thought it would be! Much like many relationships in modern days that are unknowingly based on this myth -- replayed, as it is, in countless novels, tv stories, movies and even tv news reports -- this story holds surprises that should no longer be surprising. But that is the stuff, as Joseph Campbell would have said, of living Myth -- it is not living unless it is believed, not as myth, but as fact.

This book should be taught in every high school. Not likely, though. It is so fundamental to modern mythical thinking, it is virtually taboo.

Highly recommended.

I do not recommend this as a primary textbook

I do not recommend this as a primary textbook. It is fine to supplement but is very thin on text and detail. The graphics are very good and the reading level is accessible however it does not have the depth of content needed for the subject. I am very disappointed with it.

Atlas of the Roman World

The Atlas of the Roman World traces the rise and fall of the Western Roman Empire during a period of over 1000 years. Historical periods over this time are divided into four categories. Early Italy and the Roman Republic, From Republic to Empire, Provinces of the Empire and The Empire in Decline. There are also special features on non-military matters such as art, religion and everyday life. There is a multitude of maps including military, topographical and geographical layouts and maps of the provinces of the Empire. For the military enthusiast, there is a list of the distribution of the Roman legions in the provinces during the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. There are many photographs of archaeological sites and remains. The book concludes with a description of the limited Byzantine conquest of the West and a brief word on the legacy of the Roman Empire. It is an excellent source of information and a worthwhile addition to the library of anyone interested in ancient history.

My Copy Is Worn Out

This cultural atlas has become one of my most treasured resources. I have owned and consulted it for years, and now use my copy for research, preparing for teaching Sunday School, travel planning, and helping the boys with their homework. The atlas is particularly useful when exploring Rome beyond Italy, especially in the Western and Northern provinces. Oddly, the principal shortcoming is a good map of Italy and Sicily during the Empire. Anyone who touches the Roman World can benefit from this work, and know that his or her resulting communication of that World to others will be more compelling.

Professor Fung is considered the father of bioengineering and founder of biomechanics.

Winner of Timoshenko and Poiseulle medals he's an Engineer that started to study physiology when his mother was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1957.

I am trained as a Medical Doctor and Molecular Biologist but being the son of a Professor of Civil Engineering made me understand the importance that structural engineering has in Medicine and Biology.

Now I am interested in nuclear matrix and lamins(as they are connected to aging phenomena) so I am training myself in Biomechanics, and I found that this book is the strating point.

I recommend this book to all Structural Engineers,Biomedical Engineers, MDs and Cellular and Molecular Biologists that want to understand this field.

A Masterpiece in Biomechanics!

What I would say is not a comprehensive review of what the great book talks, but just telling you a truth: if you have engineering and mathamatics background and wanna combine your background to do research in physiology, Fung's book is absolutely a must-buy. This book is profound, but it is actually rooted in nearly all fields of biomechanics research.
It is a conclusion for biomechanics research till 1980's; also this book is a truly great reference for all current researchers who are interested in biomedical research in point of view of a mathamatician and engineer.

Good Continuum Mechanical Treatment of Biomechanics

I bought this book while in a course on the mechanics of complex fluids. I needed a book, dealing with blood rheology in a continuum mechanical approach. My professor suggested that I pick up this volume.

I found the book to be very readable. The writing style is clear and succinct. Each chapter contains mathematical, as well as historical, treatment of the topic. Although I bought this book for the chapters on blood rheology, I continued reading through the book for my own amusement.

I bought this book used, for around $40. At that price, this book was a good investment.
