Another great addition to the serial

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
AHHH FRUSTERATION CITY!!!! Nicole and Mark both need a slap upside the head!! LOL They both want to be together but are pushing the other way to protect their bruised hearts.
This serial picks up right when book 1 ends. Mark is pushing Nicole’s boundaries with giving her commands to see if she will follow through. Well Nicole is also pushing Mark by NOT doing as he wishes when he is acting aloof towards her.
When Nicole has had enough she storms out of the hotel and gets a creepy feeling that she is being watched. We know that Mark is in some shady business dealings plus is being investigated for murder soooooooo….is she really crazy or is she genuine in her feelings????
Mark comes to get Nicole and takes her to “see the real him”. He says and does everything to make her mad and make her leave. Why is he pushing so bad if he really wants her and why is she running when she also wants to be right next to him. These two have major old school drama to overcome if they want to have an HEA.

Where to start - the Chemistry is hot, panty melting hot. The tension is highly strung. Mark comes across Dark and Moody. Its his way or no way. Nicole is total lost not sure what to believe and who to trust. This story just keeps getting better and you are left wanting so much more.
What i like is that these books are quick reads and yet they are packed with great suspense that keeps you turning the pages.

This is with reference to the second copy that I received from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Wow, even more intense than the first book. The plot definitely thickens and there are so many new details emerging, things that will definitely get worse before they get better. I can’t wait for the next installment to find out what happens next. If this is only the beginning, I shudder to think what’s coming. But in a good way.

Great in depth text

Updated version comes with nice online references which are very helpful. Also comes with online access to text. Unfortunately, this access ends once a new edition of the text becomes available, which occurs about every 4-5 years.

This is a large 4 volume reference that goes into extensive detail on the surgical management of orthopedic conditions. In particular the sections on total joint arthroplasty are very detailed and discusses different approaches and techniques for both primary and revision surgery. The text itself reads easily and flows moderately well. Some important details do get lost in the breadth of the text and can be hard to find.

When compared to other classic orthopedic texts, I would view this one as more of a blueprint to how to perform general orthopedic procedures and care. If you want specific basic fracture care information in a textbook format, I would choose Rockwood's. If you are wanting more in depth evidence based literature of fracture care, I would choose Skeletal Trauma.

The price is unbelievable high, and i've wished to recieve a CD with the electronic version. Though there is a possibility to download (with accesscodes) but this is exhausting and time-consuming. I expected a little more service for the money.

Herding horses and learning about life

H.L. Davis was born in Douglas County, Oregon (he died in 1962), and this novel is set in the Middle Columbia River region. It concerns the aftereffects of a murder in which two men, the narrator and Old Hendricks, share time together while herding horses. Hendricks has experienced quite a bit during his long life, and he imparts some of that hard-won knowledge to the younger narrator.

Basically it's all about being honest and true to yourself and facing up to responsibility: "There's things you can't buy out of with money, no matter how much of it you've got. There's things you can't ride away from and be shut of, no matter how hard you whip. You've got to face 'em out for yourself, all the way to the end." Those are Hendricks's words and they sum up his character.

Davis's forte as a novelist is his style: his characters are tough, honest men, and so is his writing style. His sentences are forceful and direct; they feel chiselled more than penned. And he shows a great respect for the country, the Northwest in particular, where many of his books take place. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize with his novel HONEY IN THE HORN, Davis was one of our better regional novelists.

The Real West: "Winds of Morning" by H.L. Davis

This is a western in the true sense: it tells a captivating story of love, murder and redemption set in eastern Oregon in the 1920's. The author knows his stuff and loves the land he writes about. This could be considered a romance, but it has a gritty reality and a true feel for the times and people of the west. For instance, how often have you seen the American cowboy portrayed carrying a sack of rocks to throw at the horses he is herding? Not romantic, but probably true to life. Other details ring true, from the authors huge knowledge of the flora and fauna of the country, to his extensive knowledge of firearms. This is a very well written book by a pulitzer prize winning author at the top of his game. Too bad H.L. Davis was not more appreciated in his time.

An author to discover

I recently re-read this book and liked it less well the second time. It's a moderately entertaining story about a young lawman, an older man with a complex history, a native American friend of the older man, and the older man's daughter. There is an empathetic late-frontier Oregon ambience which I like, and some fairly good character development.

The important thing is to discover this author's best writing and be spared the worst. Buy especially the Collected Essays and Short Stories collection by the University of Idaho Press. Do NOT buy Honey in the Horn!

Davis fans will find his traits demonstrated in Winds of Morning: long sentences, rich descriptions of nature--both the beautiful and the blighted, minor characters that are humorous caricatures, major characters that are empathetic and complex, and rich descriptions of place and history.

This is a little-known and under-appreciated author whose works are not of even quality. Following is my list of his works that I've read, in order of my esteem from highest to lowest.

1. The Homestead Orchard--humorous, sad, joyous, beautifully crafted short story about a father and ex-con son.
2. Old Man Isbell's Wife--humorous, exceedingly poignant short story about an aging cowboy and his younger wife
3. Bench Squatters--poignant short story about a single dad and his kids
4. Flying Switch--action-packed hilarious short story about a runaway train
5. Open Winter--sweet & realistic short story about moving a herd of horses
6. Harp of a Thousand Strings--somewhat saga-like novel of the French Revolution related to the American experience
7. Winds Of Morning--novel about a young lawman investigating a crime
8. Several other short stories--some saga-like (with Davis, saga-like tends to mean it's boring)
9. The Distant Music--saga-like novel of an Oregon family's generations
10. Beulah Land--saga-like novel of America's westward movement
11. All of Davis's essays--not profound but they reveal Davis's thinking
12. The Kettle of Fire--a fictional legend that doesn't really work
13. Honey in the Horn--spare yourself! Saga-like, overlong, random, Pulitzer-prize winning, historically wildly inaccurate, pointless novel of Oregon history

To access the short stories, get a copy of his Collected Essays and Short Stories, published by the University of Idaho Press. Even better, if you can find it at a reasonable price, buy a copy of Davis's short story collection, Team Bells Woke Me (currently the best Amazon Marketplace price is $19.21, but this gets you Bench Squatters, Flying Switch, and some other lesser pieces not in the Collected Essays and Short Stories).
