During the highly publicized sentencing of Susan Smith, the Spartanburg, SC woman convicted of murdering her two young sons, the Herald-Journal reported, "The defense, which has maintained Smith is a tormented woman who has suffered a history of mental problems and abuse, is expected to capitalize on the officers' sympathy for Smith when she confessed. If they could show compassion, defense lawyers hope the jury will believe that Smith does not deserve to die." Meanwhile, the paper reported that in its closing argument, the state directed the jury to regard Smith's behavior as a manipulative tool: "[Solicitor] Pope said the prosecution's theory is that Smith 'pretends to commit these acts to gain sympathy."'
In our society, if we are worthy of sympathy it follows that we deserve special consideration and leniency. In this original, provocative study, Candace Clark gives intriguing evidence that people do not innately know when, for whom, and in what circumstances sympathy is appropriate. Rather, they learn elaborate, highly specific cultural rules-different rules for men than for women-that guide when to feel or display sympathy, when to claim it, and how to accept it. Clark approaches sympathy as an important form of social currency. We learn early in life that sympathy must be evenly exchanged; that our "sympathy margins"-our accounts of sympathy credits we can call on in time of need-are limited. In her often amusing narrative, Clark describes the do's and don'ts of "sympathy etiquette," cultural rules that people must follow to protect their sympathy margins.
Most disturbing is Clark's identification of a darker, less obvious side of sympathy-its function as a manipulative tool in everyday encounters. What exactly happens when someone gives another sympathy? Is the receiver pleased? Is the relationship solid? Or does the receiver feel belittled and hurt? When our sympathy exposes another's problems or inability to handle those problems, a show of sympathy can humiliate or diminish the receiver. Generally, Clark constructs a kind of social tour of sympathy, revealing that the emotional experience we modern Americans call sympathy has a history, a logic, and a life of its own.
This sociology of sympathy provides a look at the mostly tacit rules of behavior that govern our expressions of sympathy in American society. Sympathy is not an easy behavior to follow because of factors of class, race, gender and multicultural expectations. As work styles change and as the plight of the poor continues to burden our social conscience, Clark sees the possibility for some norms of sympathy to evolve and change. The volume provides a reasonable look at the social context in which we express sympathy and gage its fairness and appropriateness.

Powerhouse Book!

There are lots of books out there about teaching reading, but most are about generally addressing the needs of all children. This book specifically tackles striving learners and gives multiple solutions to raise their achievement. The book is not really designed to read straight through. The beginning is a "must read" as it focuses on the latest research on what makes an effective, efficient reading program. The main part of the book is divided into three sections: Solutions for Navigating Non-Fiction, Solutions for Comprehending Fiction, and Solutions for Assessment. These are the sections you can skim through as needed. All the sections are designed to help striving learners make abstract comprehension strategies concrete. The book also comes withe a CD-ROM with customizable forms and other helpful hints.
If your general reading program is going well, but you have a few students who are still not making progress, this is a great book with lots of information that you can read quickly and then get on with the business of improving their skills.

One of the best comprehension books on the market

I don't write a lot of reviews but when I find books that offer as much guidance and as many creative solutions as this one does, I feel I need to both thank the authors and let other educators know about it. I find myself returning to this book again and again in my work with teachers. It not only practical (it is clear that each idea has been teacher-tested), but grounded in current research. What I love most, however, is the clear message that all students can learn and that all students need appropriate levels of both support and challenge. This makes Solutions for Reading Comprehension an ideal text for my work in inclusive schools. Bravo to the authors for writing such a useful book that is filled with answers and that communicates a belief in the complexity and competence of all young readers.

Required text for class

As far as required textbooks go, this is one of my favorites. I was required to buy it for my class this semester. I haven't decided for sure, but I think I will keep this textbook after the semester is over. It has a nice, easy to read, layout and has a bunch of great reading intervention ideas for one-on-one, small group, and entire class. This was one of my favorite books this semester.

A Foundational book on the science of values

Milton Rokeach is probably one of the most respected and quoted authorities in the area of value studies. This text follows his privotal book, "The Nature of Human Values." In this text, Rokeach attempts to "go beyond the conceptualization and measurement of individual values to the conceptualization and measurement of supraindividual values...." His is one of the first works to apply solid (rather than rhetorical) logic to issues of values in organizations. This book covers many important areas including change and stability of American Values, discusses issues such as "Can Values be Manipulated?" and spends three chapters on Value Education. Rokeach is the editor for this text, and also a contributor for half-a-dozen of the articles in the book.

the comical side of the occult

This is a classic read - original, funny, shocking and somewhat frightening in places. Un-put-down-able, a tale of a student in swinging 60's London whose chosen subject for his university dissertation is devil worship and the occult. He joins a secret society in the heart of London and details his experiences and training in the underworld. Somewhat comical at first and laced with sex and drugs; but the mood soon turns and you find yourself caught up in a real nightmare of Satan.

Never drop acid while pursued by Satanists

Robert Irwin is the author of one of my favourite off-beat, phantasmagoric novels - 'The Arabian Nightmare', which I rank right up there with Gustav Meyrink's 'The Golem' and 'The Green Face', and with George MacDonald's 'Phantastes'. With themes including sex, Satanism, the Sixties, Rock and Roll, London, and drugs (lots of drugs), you might have thought 'Satan Wants Me' would have been a sure-fire bestseller. It was first published in 1999 but I don't recall it being a bestseller, at least not on this side of the Atlantic, and the reason might be that it has a fatal flaw, disqualifying it from bestsellerdom -it is written too well. A novel with such a lurid title surely promises legions of scaly, over-wrought red demons and other tenebrous denizens of the sub-sub-basement, or perhaps serial exorcisms of nubile nymphets due to multiple Mephistophelian possessions at a girl's school combined with an invasion of infernal, bestial field mice? No, sorry. No wavy daggers. And not a baby sacrifice to be found. No humourless, homicidal albino monks either. What we do have is a very good and ultimately unsettling story, cleverly written in the form of a diary. I like this point of view when it is done well because, while it is intimate and really puts the reader inside the head of the protagonist, it is also circumscribed -you are largely limited to just one perspective and you are reading about events after the fact. You are not only limited by how the writer of the diary is limited in seeing the world, you are limited by what the writer wants to tell you. This perspective forces you as the reader to work -to put together the pieces of an incomplete puzzle and guess at what the missing ones might be.

The story is about a shallow, confused, hip young man working on his graduate thesis in London in 1967. He and his girlfriend become involved with an occult group that takes itself very seriously indeed. About a third of the way through the book, I thought I knew exactly where everything was heading and that I could predict the ending. I was quite wrong. Although there is an abundance of humour in this tale, its overall effect was unsettling on a number of levels. Uncanny events are believably portrayed. There are parts that I found genuinely disturbing.

Robert Irwin was a peripheral figure around the Church of The Process during its infancy in Mayfair during the swinging sixties.
He is clearly therefore qualified to comment on the occult influences of the time.

This drug fueled, paranoiac trip gives a thoroughly refreshing and insightful look into an oft misunderstood age.
I found myself equally amused as I was enthralled and at times impressed by the authors knowledge and insight in to the subject and the unique ability this gave him to parody and mock the self seriousness of the characters.

I felt myself emotionally entangled with the characters and unable to put down what is a real page turner for anyone ith a passing interest in the occult influence on the sixties.

Enlightening and spiritually whole

This book centers around the idea that the world is what we dream it to be. It is spiritual, it is enlightening, and it shows you that people in the "every day" world seek this information too. I read this book because last year I was reading a series of books by Perkins, and Alberto Villoldo (I would highly recommend him too!) and they are so helpful in terms of bettering yourself and learning about yourself and how to change your inner world to change the outer world.

Interesting but not helpful

This is a short book filled mostly with stories about John's excursions into the rainforests of Ecuador to introduce gringos (wealthy gringos, as he puts it) to shamans and their knowledge. He and the shamans help people do out of body experiences and healings using the local mind-altering concoctions - alcohol, ayahuasca, etc. In my opinion, he should combine this book with his two other short ones - Psychonavigation and The Stress Free Habit so people could get a book that's worth paying for.
I liked the book because it described the land and indigenous people of Ecuador to some extent and it did have a few ideas towards helping the world be a better place for all.

Speaks directly to the heart!

Having visited the Otavalan area of Ecuador three times...always with others wanting to follow whatever i found or discovered there...i regret that i could not have handed them this book to read instead of their trying to figure out what i was doing with the shamans and shamanas and so on. :) Much wisdom is instilled in the pages of this slim book that will carry you back to this place and urge you to respond in some spiritual way.

To expect that someone would tell you how to heal others is naive at best and not what is meant by the author when revealing what actually goes on when you meet some of the Ecuadorean shamans. You will never forget any encounter you have, but you must realize they are not all willing to welcome you into their lives now. There is a wonderful village of shamans outside of Otavalo that only those who know someone and have gained their trust will admit you to now...but perhaps things will begin to loosen up as Americans flood into the area seeking refuge from our staggering economy and hoping to live better lives--or not.

Well worth your time and money...which cannot be said for many books out on the subject today!
