Dated but extremely useful
By Dimitrios
This old book published belogning to the excellent Ballantine series of the 1970s does not contain any color photo but has numerous black and white photos, some very good maps and excellent text which covers ecery aspect of the airbridge to China. The author presents thes trategiv background of the airlift operation and clears enough the picture of the complex relations between the Allies and the Chinese Nationalists. In my opinion the best chapter whas the one dealing with the practical difficulties of flying "over the hump", like the adverse weather, the logistics, the many mechanical problems of new aircraft types, how and when the Indian airbases were constructed and how the tonnage grew from a mere hundred tons a month to over 70.000 tons (!) a month in three years.

Excellent and concise overview of the Hump airlift campaign
By Jan Hope
This book, in the Ballantine's Illustrated History of the Violent Century series from the early 1970s, provides an excellent and concise overview of the Hump airlift campaign, the political reasons for it, the conflict among national and theater commanders revolving around it, the operational commanders and their challenges, the pilots and crews, the aircraft, the weather, and the cargo. If you only read one book on the airlift campaign, this is the one to have. In addition to this book, if you have time for four books, then you will also want Over the Hump by Lieutenant General Tunner, the last commanding general of the Hump operation, Flying the Hump by Otha Spencer for a pilot's eye view of it all, and The Hump by John Plating for a recent scholarly examination on the strategy and operations of the airlift campaign. If you want to explore the history of this campaign with a table top paper and pencil simulation, a complete simulation book in PDF format, Over the Hump Airlift Campaign, is available as a free download on Board Game Geek.

One of the first and earliest books on the subject, and it works as an overview and introduction to the subject
By Kiwiwriter
McDonald Publishing and the Imperial War Museum teamed up back in the late 1960s and early 1970s to publish this tight series of illustrated paperbacks on the history of World War I, World War II (and a few other conflicts of the 20th century), which were picked up by Ballantine in the United States. They were all divided into subjects: battles, campaigns, weapons, war leaders, politics in action, human conflict, and regalia, by color bands on the bottom, enjoying common editing and artwork, and a fairly common collection of well-known historians. They cost $1 at the time (a good deal of money) and a lot more now (being out of print).

The series as a whole is slightly outdated by the disclosures from Allied codebreaking, and suffered from being whipped together in a hurry, but they remain then and now a fine introduction to conflict in the 20th century -- if you can find them.

The "Hump" airlift was one of the major efforts of the US Army Air Force in the Second World War, and it has never received the publicity it deserved, because it was critical to keeping Chiang Kai-Shek in power and China in the war against Japan. The technologies and techniques devised in the airlift enabled the US and Britain to feed Berlin during the 1948 blockade and the massive airlift efforts of Korea, Vietnam, and other wars, and the air freight operations of the modern age.

To the crews who worked and flew in the difficult and primitive conditions, it was a ghastly ordeal. Hump aviators didn't have to deal too often with Japanese fighters, but the Himalayan mountains were tough enough. The route was called the "aluminum trail" for the line of crashed airplanes along it, whose remains lie there to this day.

Mr. Koenig's prose is fairly typical of the series, and the photographs, all black-and-white, along with a few illustrations, convey both the difficulties of the operation and the struggles between the colorful American, British, and Chinese personalities who commanded in the theater: familiar names like Stilwell, Chennault, Chiang, and Mountbatten.

This book seems to have been one of the first and earliest books on the subject, and it works as an overview and introduction to the subject. Later books have more detail and humanity, but you can't go wrong by starting here.
