About the Author

Grant Pooke lectures in the History & Philosophy of Art at the University of Kent. He is co-author of Teach Yourself Art History (2003) and the author of Francis Klingender 1907–1955: An Iconographer Out of Time (2007).

Diana Newall completed her doctoral studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Previously an authoring consultant for the Open University’s Teach&Learn project, Diana works as a freelance lecturer and writer.

Exceptional and far from basic

Grant Pooke (History and Philosophy of Art at Kent University) and Diana Newall (previously an authoring consultant for Open University Teach&Learn Project) have put together a concise and intellectually subtle survey of major thinkers and movements. The book starts off on the thin side, expounding in a note format the more basic methodologies that have populated the critical landscape, but it soon proceeds to fashion a veritable journey through ideas and thinkers which have mystified the lot of writers out there who devote themselves to a commercial, democratic project such as this. In other words when the authors discuss semiotics and poststructuralism, post-marxism, T.J. Clark, or representations of gender, they assume the role of a professional teacher that seeks to explain while demanding of himself or herself to impart understanding to its audience. When it is impossible to do justice to a thinker or an artist (such as Adorno or Gerhadt Richter) they give just enough inofrmation to illustrate the relevance they had on Art History, and do so with such penetrating insights as to leave any perplexing questions in its proper perspective and within a responsible vantage point. When they can, and this happens much too often given the space they operate within, they offer exceptional readings that in a nutshell give the full panoply of the impact and wisdom of such art critics as T.J. Clark, Hal Foster, Linda Nochlin, Chasseguet-Smirgel, Baudrillard, Mulvey, Danto and Lyotard (to be honest they leave something to be desired in repsects to the October school of Art critics, but they do incorporate them just enough). They dabble just fine into Charles Sanders Pierce and Lacan - a sucess worth thebook on its own accord.In essence this is an invaluable compendium of theorists and ideas that reads fluidly and may well substitute for thousands of dollars spent on a University Course. And they give a very instructive reading of many artists (such as Smithson, Jago Max Williams, Jacques-Louis David, Judy Chicago, Eduard Manet, Duchamps, Malevich, George Dannatt, Kapoor, Koons amongst others). One should receive credits for reading the book. Yes it is that good. If you haven't the time to devote years to reading all the thinkers and movements they touchupon, do pick this book up and devote a week to it. It will soon lay by your bedside and increase your understanding of the topic exponentially. And this comes from someone who has devoted years to reading most all the critics and artists they discuss. An excellent introduction and an even better survey that gives direction and disseminates possible readings.

Good intro

This book is my first exposure to modern art histories. I am not an academic nor enrolled student; just a curious layperson. After reading this, I am more than just curious, I thirst for more.

The book throws out a lot of names and complicated ideas. It scratches the surface enough to give the flavor of the contours of thought in this complex discipline and enough to leave me wanting more. Fortunately, each chapter contains a descriptive further reading section—this book is going to sell books by other authors.

This book will remain my overall bibliography and starting guide for years to come as I delve further into art history, or rather, art histories.

Decoded!

The Basics offers exactly what it claims to offer--a quick and dirty breakdown of the theories of art history at their most basic. It is a fantastic tool and starting point (STARTING point, it does require some work on the part of the reader when it comes to fleshing out some of the content). Perfect for students, I loved it.

About the Author

Lou Rosenfeld is an independent information architecture consultant. He has been instrumental in helping establish the field of information architecture, and in articulating the role and value of librarianship within the field. Lou played a leading role in organizing and programming the first three information architecture conferences (both ASIS&T Summits and IA 2000). He also presents and moderates at such venues as CHI, COMDEX, Intranets, and the web design conferences produced by Miller Freeman, C|net and Thunder Lizard. He teaches tutorials as part of the Nielsen Norman Group User Experience Conference.

Peter Morville is president of Semantic Studios, an information architecture, user experience, and findability consultancy. Since 1994, he has advised such clients as AT&T, Harvard, IBM, the Library of Congress, Microsoft, the National Cancer Institute, Vodafone, and the Weather Channel. Peter is best known as a founding father of information architecture, having co-authored the field's best-selling book, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web. Peter has served on the faculty at the University of Michigan's School of Information and on the advisory board of the Information Architecture Institute. He delivers keynotes and seminars at international events, and his work has been featured in major publications including Business Week, The Economist, Fortune, and The Wall Street Journal. Deep in content, but not the most accessible

How to Make Sense of Any Mess: Information Architecture for Everybody is a better book for introduction to the topic of Information Architecture. Much more accessible. however, this one is great as a deeper text book for UX/IA practitioners.

This is a brilliantly reframed reinvention of a digital design classic

This is a brilliantly reframed reinvention of a digital design classic. It catches the "polar bear" up with the way information architecture has matured to be not just about the web we see in browsers, but the whole world of digitally disrupted environments that need us to make sense of them across all channels and contexts. Yet it still gives practical everyday direction on organizing and planning for the web and everything the web has become since the first polar bear book came out 20 years ago. If you've never read this book, get it. And if you have read it in the past, get it anyway, because you're due for an update.

About the Author

Randall I. Atlas, PhD, AIA, CPP, is president of Atlas Safety & Security Design, Inc., in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. Atlas is a nationally recognized speaker, trainer, and writer on crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) and has worked in these capacities for the National Crime Prevention Institute (NCPI), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS). Dr. Atlas is a certified protection professional (CPP) with ASIS and is a member and past chairman of the Security Architecture and Engineering Council (SAEC). He is a human factors and ergonomics expert and is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). He was a technical assistance consultant to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Drug Elimination Grant Program and has conducted numerous CPTED and infrastructure security audits throughout the United States. Dr. Atlas has contributed numerous articles to the Protection of Assets manual and Access Control & Security Systems, Security Technology & Design, Security Management, Door Hardware Institute, and Parking Today magazines.

Dr. Atlas serves on the National Fire Protection Association 730 Committee on Premises Security, has contributed to NFPA 730: Guide for Premises Security (NFPA, 2006–2012, Quincy, MA), and has served on the ASIS Physical Security Guidelines Committee, developing the Facility Physical Security Measures (2009) publication. Dr. Atlas serves on the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) technical committees F33 on Corrections and Detention Facilities, ASTM E54 Homeland Security Committee, F13 Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear, and F12 Committee on Security Systems and Equipment. He is a member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners; the International Association of Counterterrorism and Security Professionals; National Floor Safety Institute Standards Committee B101 Safety Requirements for Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention; Florida Design Out Crime; and United States Regional Board representative of the International CPTED Association. Dr. Atlas is certified in the Sandia Labs Risk Assessment Methodology RAM-W (Dams), RAM-T (Power) 2002; critical infrastructure and asset protection―ACAM and PCII, April 2010; antiterrorism specialist, Anti-Terrorism Accreditation Board, 2010; and is a certified master antiterrorism specialist, Anti-Terrorism Accreditation Board, 2010.

Dr. Atlas serves as an expert witness on many premises security cases and as an architectural consultant on large justice architecture projects. He received his doctorate in criminology from Florida State University, a master’s of architecture from the University of Illinois, and has bachelor degrees in architecture and criminal justice from the University of Florida and the University of South Florida, respectively.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Needed to Address Evolving Crime in the 21st Century

Randy Atlas, PhD., CPP, AIA, is likely the most qualified writers and trainers on CPTED, approaching the likes of the past legends of CPTED the likes of Oscar Newman, the late Tim Crowe, etc. While there are many scholars and practitioners that could rise to take the mantle of leadership defining the face of proselytizing for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to the masses, I think Dr. Atlas's book clearly puts him forward as the front runner. Since 1991, Tim Crowe's book, "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: applications of architectural design and space management concepts" has been the core curriculum for CPTED practioneers, architects, schools, etc; Crowe's book was given an update in 2000. But there have been many improvements, criticisms, and updates to CPTED that have not found their place within one cover until Dr. Atlas released his important contribution to the industry. CPTED is the design or redesign of an environment to reduce crime opportunity and fear of crime. CPTED is achieved through access control, surveillance, and territorial reinforcing strategies that incorporate procedural, mechanical, and natural methods. As CPTED has evolved, several defined schools of CPTED thought have formed that are frequently characterized by the professionals that espouse the school variants; there is a Florida school, an Australian school, and Canadian school of CPTED, and many variations more. Indeed, some scholars, such as Greg Saville, Ph.D. (also a contributor to Dr. Atlas's book), have focused on 2nd Generation CPTED brining even more color analysis to the implementation and thinking that must go into successful application of CPTED strategies and methods. This particular book on CPTED is an important core contribution to the professional security manager's tool kit for reducing crime in specific places. It augments and builds upon the successful work of prior scholars in the field. But Dr. Atlas has done much more than just focus on what CPTED was, or has become. Rather, Dr. Atlas asks the difficult questions, what should we be doing? How shall we adapt to new and changing crime situations? And what about entertaining new ideas about old concepts? Indeed, Dr. Atlas is not afraid of confronting challenges with CPTED theory, but rather meets these challenges head on by inviting guest contributors to his book that bring a collective balance to the presentation of data, theory, and practical applications. In closing, and in fairness the reader, I disclose that I had a very small part to play in the book's production; I am a co-author of one of the 32 chapters of this book, "Chapter 6: Understanding CPTED and Situational Crime Prevention," written by Severin Sorensen, John Hayes, and Randy Atlas. My small participation in this project should in no way discount my review of Dr. Atlas's important work; rather quite the opposite, my own experience with CPTED makes me the perfect reviewer for this important work. It is for this reason that 21st Century Security and CPTED is a must read for security professionals. It will no doubt become part of the core curriculum of CPTED practitioners, architects, police officers, property managers, and security personnel interested in learning how to make the built environment more defensible and safer. The book is a solid contribution to the field, should be in every library of criminology, security management, police studies, and architecture. It is a good read.
